YS THs CITY OF NEVADA INCORPORATED A Misadventure in Civic Government 1851 Many highly divergent takes have been told of the first igcorporation of Novada City, of the fantastic: lly grandiose city government therewith instituted, and of the deplorable faux pas in which this misabventure terminated. For a number of years this was an unpalatable subject in this comunity. With this in mind we have here played safe, and rather than attempting, at this late date, to write the story of the abortive attempt to establish a municipal government, we present herewith this story as told by a writer who most certainly knew whereof he spoke. Less than four years after the revocation of the charter of 1851, Aaron Agustus accent a distinguished leader of the Nevada County Bar, in "An Historical Sketch of Nevada County", included an unquestionabax veracious account of this episode. This account is herewith presented verbatim. t. "Early in the spring of 1851, certain wise men of the inhabitants of Nevada, having in view. the dignities and ondiveaate of office, and little concertion of the real wants of the place, after putting their heads together, without consulting the mass of the inhabitants, beseiged the Legislature, and on the 13th of March procured the passage of en act incorporating the "City of Nevada."
