e 1852 NOTES
Nevada Journal, Jam. 3, 1852¢
The city: is upom the hillsides and om the ridges, among the streams
and over them, the muddy water rushing beneath houses, stores and
hotels, and through the streets splashing and gurgling as if uttering
self-congratulatimg hymns for their escape: from man's torturing
interuptioms, cradles, long toms, sluices, flumes, mills, canals and
tunnels.
Not until after a personal observation of the natural riches of
Nevada County had I anything like an adequate conception of the fold—
en abundance which rests in the bosom of our state, a;though from the
indications fiven, our neonle have scarcely yet passed the threshold
of the auriferious valace, richer im its substantial treaures than
the f ancy nictures of the Arabian Nights. ‘he amount of gold taken
from the nlacer diggings in the vicinity during two years would almost stagcer belief, could it be stated. Much of the earth has been
washed.
