& 7,112 Indians _ and Chinese e Here in 1852 Census for Nevada County in 1852 showed the following statistics: “12,448 males, 920 females, 103 negroes, 721 male foreiginers, 61 female forzigners, 3,386 Chinese, and 3,226. Indians”. gon4 . The population was at the time pretty .well divided between Rough and Ready, Grass Valley and Nevada City. 1 From the outset of the year 1851, Nevada County ‘was rapidly filling up with miners. Nevada City had become the mostimpfortant town because of the discovery of hill diggings and) “coyote claims”, and inthe} spring of 1351 it was made the county seat. Rough and Ready was still prospering, but because of the successful development of the quartz mines which were all inor around Grass Valley, the latter town began to acquire consider-.
