Union Iron Works: For many years the whole coast was almost entirely
denendent on the foundries of Sam Francisco for necessary iron
work. James and Peter Donahue established the Union Iron Works
in 1849. James sold to Peter iin 1856. Small crude furnace and
a few com:on tools not even covered or protected from the weather.
Furnace blast nroduced by two blacksmiths bellows. The first
iron casting turned out on the Pacific Coast wasnade in the shape
of a stead or snring bearing for the vropellor of McKim. This
casting cost .59 a vound.
In 1856, Peter Donahue erected a large brick building om the site
of the roofless workshop of 1349.
1063 formed a co-partnership with H.J.Booth of marysviille and
C.S.Higgins, under the:ame of Donahue, Booth & Co.
Pacific iron Works established im ls+O by mr. Goddard.
