Appeal Aug. 25, 1860
In a letter from Downieville signed "Yuba""This passage: "The
mining claims in the immediate vicinity of Downieville are of
very little-account. Most of the river claims are being worked
by Chinamen who average an ounce or two to a claim per day.
at the present low stage of water the miners are able to sluice
the whole lenght of the river. Flutter wheels are in motion’on
the stream from here to Goodyear's Bar. There are, however, in
addition to these claims, several rich quartz claims up near
the Buttes. The trade between here: and Washoe is very brisk, and
passengers are arriving here en route for that argentiferous land.
Downieville people have made much money out of this excitement
and will reap a rich harvest before they have done with it.™
