POLITICAL Appeal May 23, 1861 Assemblymen J.M.Avery & N.C.Miller of Nevada Co. pass through marysvl on Way home from 2¥ Sacramento. Editor declares that they have been good members of the Legislature--practical, sensible, industrious and hinest. Appeal May 25, 1861 Senator Latham makes a Union speech at Grass Valley. The Nevada Jrnl endorses the call for a mass Union Convention and urges Union men of Nevada Co. to select delegates. In this issue the Journal has a long telling editorial discussing objectives of the Civil War. May 27, 1861 The Nevada Rifles require members to take the Army Oath; none reSused. May 29, 1861 Item from Nevada Journal discusses new government of Grass Valley. (see 5/15 Nevada Democrat quoted in an item re E.W.Maslin, Dist. Att. of Nevada Co, who refuses to take an oath demanded by the Nevada Rifles of which he is a member. He says he cannot support Pres. Lincoln who, he declares, is violating the Constitution. Editor of the Democrat believes that Lincoln is going to feel bad about that. Appeal May 30, 1861 The Breckinridszers of Nevada Co. to hold a Convention on June 8 and the Douglas Democrats on June 29, May 31, 1861 Nevada Transcript notes that some men are putting letterfing on their hats reading "The Union forever". June i, 1861 Editorial quoted from Nevada Jrnl limiting its support of a Union Party. Some very delicate shades of Calig. politics are cited. Appeal June 2 Report of Union meeting at N. San Juan. Resolution signed by 60 members residents of San Juan denouncing the proposed Pacific Republic. Appeal June 4, 1861 Letter describes Union activity in NSJ.
