Deputy U.S. Marshal C. H. Peterson_served copies of Sawyer's decree upon
hydraulic mining companies in this county that were included among defendants in
Woodruff suit. Treated with courtesy and no effort to evade him.
Work suspended at_Idaho_ mine. Break in South Yuba Canal that supplied water
power for haisting and milling machinery.
Marysville trying to ruin value of Excelsior Co's mining property at Smartsville.
Stopped by court. Like offering sympathy after knocking down with a club.

Today hang _ Callins
Appears to grow more vicious as time nears for him to pay penalty. Says he is
most hardened criminal ever to stretch a rope in Nevada County. No one any
sympathy for him. He tries to be obnoxious. Most of community just sorry his
companion, Dorsey alias Thome, is not with him on gallows.
Injunction against hydraulic has seriously affected Marysville freighting. Now
being diverted to Truckee. Town dull as it hit off nose to spite face.
Five tramps hospitality of town ‘pil during storm, last square meal, then
escorted to m depot and shipped to Calfax and given the wholesome advice to keep
traveling and not come back. Young, stout, healthy, idlers, loafers.
Host of idle vagrants growing evil throughout state.
Latham Smith fined $30 for disturbing peace of public meeting of Debating
Society. Two other young men to be tried for malicious mischief for cutting tugs
of hamess of people at the meeting. Local sensation and much ill feelings.
2 Feb Truckee merchants say that at no time since town built as dull as now.
Chinese New ear opened with fight between Ah_Chew. and Nam _Jan over money
matters. Pistols drawn in North San Juan and one shot in arm.
Execution of John _C.P. Collins murderer of Wm F. Cum mings, meets fate.
