i hd Ae hei ea CLAIMS OF CALIFORNIA INDIANS 25 Agitation for Indian Relief With the rediscovery of the treaties the conditions surrounding the California Indians began to excite public sympathy. Through the years since then various groups have been active in bringing to general view the unfortunate situation of these Indians and in urging that just and equitable relief ” be accorded them. Prominent among these groups has been the Commonwealth Club of California. As early as 1909 it had considered at one of its meetings the subject of “Indian Rights and Wrongs.” ® Intermittent consideration followed until in 1924 a special Section on Indian Affairs was formed to investigate and report on conditions of the Indians. Assistance in securing data was given by many qualified experts. This study,’ completed in 1926, included an examination of the legal status of the California Indians, the educational facilities ° Commonwealth Club of California, Transactions, Vol. IX, No. 7. 7 Commonwealth Club of California, Transactions, Vol. XXI, No. 3.
