Bautista was Hispanic. Savage visited and conversed with Indians in one languages,
and Ward could see Indians with wider range of emotions. He decides to study Indian
languages to enjoy similar influence as Savage had. Ward wouldn’t despense beef ration if
Ind. Traded at another store.
Keeping unwanted and unauthorized whites off the Stanislaus rez was another
problem for Johnson. Anyone selling merchandize or alcohol would forfeit goods and be
fined. Without authorization Johnson issued a trading license and supplying contracts. Also
authorized immunizations on own initiative: vacinating 52330 Ind between Stanislaus and
Kaweah. Ind. Office billed $13,401. Johnson even supplied greater quantities of beef than
authorized in treaties. Beef contracts were prized. Fremont put himself forward and took
risk of signing contract before treaties ratified and payment assured. Bought for $12 each
and sold for $75.
In August, Johnson asked General E. A. Hitchcock to place soldiers under his
command to make a show of force to scare off intruders on the reservation after some Ind
fled to Sierras. Hitchcock he had no authority from the President, which would take 2
months travel time to obtain. H went to govemor for approval, but governor declined
getting involved. 122 Stanislaus and Merced Ind. Were better fed thanks to Johnson; Ind.
To south were angry that they were starving and faced breaking treaty.
What ensues is jealousy, greed, power struggles, with Johnson claiming credit.

back to valley but in April 1852, 2 miners were killed. Miners took revenge on Ind. Soldiers
at Fort Miller went to chastise Indains, and Ind. From Fresno Rez. And Savage joined the
hunt. The Yosemites pointed out Teneya had not signed a treaty and other chiefs had no
authority to sell the Yosemite. 143 Soldiers have stifivcley overtaking Ind. Meanwhile Pauites
attack to the Yosemite after latter steals stock.
With Savage’s prompting Ind. Form intertribal organization, delivered beef. Savdg
has Indian leader deliver order to leave the reservation on King’s River. Then offended
traders returned and attacked Indian village with Indian dead. Indians in a pickle “Where
shall we go and what shall we do?” said Pasqual. We are weak and vulnerable. Whites kill
women and children on rez. And hunt us if we flee to mountains. Savage intervened to _
restore peace near Kings river. Ind. Want those responsible for the killing of several at
Watoka’s village. Wozencraft defers issueing warrants when he learns head of posse of
volunteers was recently elected judge of Tulare County. Savage then killed in a skirmish with
Walter Harvey, the judge. Feds come into to calm things down and one chief offers daughter
