JONES’ PANTOSCOPE OF CALIFORNIA 239
Water is conveyed to the “long toms” by large Canvass Hose. China
men abound in the gold Regions, Honest, industrious, Citizens, Harmless and inoffensive, They become much attached to our institutions, and
country — and are great hands to celebrate the fourth of July.
Diamond springs hotel, Our apology for showing the back part of
this splendid edifice is, that the front is no better. Though it does not
rival the “St. Nicholas,” or “Metropolitan” Hotels, in magnificence, or
luxury. It far exceeds them in the price of accomodation. We here
paid five dollars a day for board, with 50 cts extra for the privelidge of
sleeping on the dining table in our own blankets with our saddle for a
pillow. [Illustration missing. .
Descending from these lofty mountains, we pass over a Succession of
rolling foot hills streaching far in the distance, to the blue base of the
coast range Mountains The charming valley of the Sacramento is
seen Bedotted with orchard-like groves of the ever green — Live oak,
and beautified by the sparkling silvery mountain streams, which meander across it to join the Sacramento River.
A short Journey brings us to Capt Sutters fort, A large “Adobe”
fortification, around which gathers much of romance, of interest, and
importance, in the history of California. Captain Sutter arrived here
sixteen years since a solitary traveller.‘ — Delighted with the soil, and
the climate, he here determined to remain, and establish a free, and
independent home. Mexican after Mexican had been driven away, in
their attempts to colonize the valley. But persevering, by kindness, and
the excercise of skill, and well timed authority, he soon gained such an
ascendency over the tribes, that by their labor alone, this large establishment was erected, The walls are of sundried bricks, or “adobe,” all
around the interior their are workshops As vessels approached the
coast from time, to time, he obtained sailors and workmen ___ By these
and himself Indians were instructed and a great number of branches
of trade were carried on when war broke out, Mexicans and indians
were supplied with clothing, hats, and every thing necessary to humanize, and civilize them Immediately upon the declaration of war
against Mexico, Captain Sutter Elevated the stars and stripes over his
fort defended them with all his wealth, and power, and gave to freedom
a Golden Empire to be the brightest in the constellation
The City of Sacramento is seen as we approach it from San Francisco, It is a faithfull copy of a series of nine daguereotypes taken from
the opposite bank, You are able to read the signs of the business men
along the landing. [lIllustration missing. .
