Ilo CALIFORNIA HISTORICAL SOCIETY QUARTERLY
If you can make arrangemts to have this matter brought out soon I
will greatly oblige me and I am willing to compensate you — or do any
thing in my power to recompense you —
With this you will recieve a package of pictures for the second
article — I am now engaged upon the letter press for both articles and
they will be ready at an early day — as soon as the engravings can be
got ready —
At the steeple Rocks of which you have a picture — on my painting I have my party Daguerreotyping — while some are gun in hand
around the rocks watching the Indians, I should like to introduce some
incident of the kind — and can describe such incidents as may be well
to introduce — on your suggestion
My pictures and my article will be an entirely differant affair from
that which has already appeard — And can be diminished from Thirty
pages — or Extended to Sixty pages each article — abounding with descriptions of the country — & incidents of travel and among Indians
Mormons, and Californians — “
I should like to make arrangements for the purchase of Extra sheets
of the articles — for binding in separate form after the dates of the
Magazines shall have grown old —
I desire to get an engraving from Daguerreotype of myself—the
usual size to accompany an article and a small book, done in good
style — Perhaps it might be introduced in connection with the Magazine articles — you will know best Please inform me—When you
could engrave this head — and on what terms I am now approaching
N Y and in a few weeks shall be exhibiting in your city —
A Brother lately graduated is now assisting me so as to leave me
some time for literature and I propose as soon as I get Your Magazine
articles finished to — Get ready for publication My Book of travels —
From very extensive manuscript and notes written on the Plains and
among the mountains of California
Can you give me any Idea of what terms — the Messrs Harpers —
would publish such a work
The Exhibition of my Pantoscope would secure the sale of thousands of copies —I have daily applications Where I am exhibiting for
such a book
My “Pantoscope” meets with very gratifying success — and will do
much better when these articles appear
Hoping an Early answer at your convenience I am Very Respectfully
J. WESLEY JONES
