Page TPof 52 cdic Morning Union, 10 July 1912 Mayor Chapman called attention to the fact that “ra ragging” was allowed at the Olympia Park dances, but when asked by Supervisor Miller to give a definition of this class of dance Mr. Chapman was unable to give expert knowledge. “Mix Mix ragging,” said the mayor, “with sexes, liquor and pine trees and you have the greatest combination possible for working out e\ out evil.” Long article about raucous hearing of county board of supervisors about the liquor license, four for, four against, and one swing. Several petitions presented, mostly signed by women, and many who wanted to speak. Most vocal against were Congregationalists and Methodists. Brewer's lawyer spoke. Law on Brewer’s side as private property and recent court decisions were in favor, Brewer charging no entrance fee to the public. Church people say they'd picnic there if “clean,” one saying he could charge a small entrance fee to make the park make money without alcohol sales. Brewers said a rumor the following month that he was charging admission nearly ruined him, as he had no business. though he advertised extensively that the park was free. Supervisors still undecided. Morning Union, 11 July 1912 SUPERVISORS GRANT RETAIL LICENSE TO HER Action Was Unanimous At Meeting Held Yesterday Morning. PART OF ORDINANCE ORDERED REPEALED No More Temporary Licenses Except Where Business Changes Hands. The board of supervisors in, regular session yesterday morning unanimously agreed to grant Howard F. Brewer ! a retail liquor license to conduct a bar on the north side of the lake at Olympia Park, approximately 100 feet from the wooden wagon bridge at the entrance to the park. In accordance with the petition gotten up at the mass meeting recently held at the Grass Valley Methodist church a portion of section S' of ordinance No. 96, permitting the immediate issuance of a license upon application without having the sanction of the board, was ordered repealed. i. Heretofore the ordinance.. provided that a new applicant could secure a temporary license from the tax collector until the application was formally presented at a meeting of the board of supervisors. The repeal does away with the granting of a temporary license to the new applicant who must wait until the supervisors are in session. When a business changes hands, however, the purchaser may conduct the saloon under a temporary license until the next meeting of the supervisors when he must make application in proper form. Morning Union 16 July 1912 Manager Brewer of Olympia Park has made a change in the nights for the dances on the platform on the lake and commencing tonight the dances will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday nights. Tonight will witness the first dance under the new schedule and no doubt a large attendance will be noted. Dancing will take place from eight until eleven and everybody who attends will be assured an enjoyable evening. Morning Union 16 July 1912 License was granted, and opponents up in arms, invoking the Declaration of Independence, and charging supervisors with hidden private and personal interests.
