‘The Act of May 18, 1928, authorized the enrollment of California Indians born before
May 18, 1928, and who were residents of California at the time of enrollment. Those
enrolled claimed enrollment rights through the California Indian blood of their ancestors who
were living in California on June 1, 1852. Separate rolls were also created for rejected
applicants and Indians living in California not of California Indian descent. The initial roll
was certified on September 30, 1932, and a supplement was certified on February 18, 1933.
Fred A. Baker, Examiner of Inheritance (on detail to the Sacramento Agency), certified the
rolls.
1. 1928 ROLL OF CALIFORNIA INDIANS CERTIFIED 1932-1933. 3 vols. 6 in.
The records are arranged in three subseries, as follows:
(1) Roll of California Indians: Arranged numerically by final roll number, 1-21981,
which consists of the initial roll (roll numbers 1-21977) and the supplemental roll (roll
numbers 21978-21981).
(2) Roll of rejected applicants: Arranged by final roll number, 1-1135, which consists
of the initial roll (numbers 1-1025) and the supplemental roll (numbers 1026-1135).
(3) Roll of Indians living in California on May 18, 1928, not of California Indian
descent: Arranged by roll number, 1-245, which consists of the initial roll (numbers 1-228)
and the supplemental roll (numbers 229-245).
On each of the three rolls and three supplements, roll numbers were assigned in
alphabetical order by English sumame of the head of the household. Because family groups
were listed together on the rolls, those household members having a different sumame than
the head of the household appear “out of order" alphabetically. These individuals are listed
twice on the roll, once numerically by roll number, and a second time alphabetically by
sumame. The alphabetical lisung provides a cross-reference to the roll number listing.
The pages of the roll have columns for the following:
Marginal Reference (This appears to have been used for handwritten notes
applied at a later date, mostly with the following stamps: “Dead” and
“Presumed dead by authority of June 8, 1954 Act")
