JOHN CARPENTER ABBOTT (
(AMER, DEM, REP)
—Came to Calif.
April 1852—His store on Commercial St., Nevada City,
Nevada County, was robbed by John Barrett.
Dec 13, 1853—Dancing school held in Abbott’s Room, corner
Pine and Commercial sts.
July 21,1854— Abbott & Co. announced plan to erect a brick
building at Pine and Commercial sts.
Oct 31, 1854—J. C. Abbott & Co. bought interest of R. T.
Friend in Friend & Rhoades furniture business.
1854—Court sessions sometimes held in Abbott’s Hall because of poor condition of the court house.
Jan 19, 1855—Offered to sell building and lot at Pine and
Commercial sts. and several buildings and lots on Pine st.
in order to leave Calif.
Feb 6, 1855—Ended partnership with R. C. Rhoades.
July 13, 1855—He and Thomas Edwards were excavating lot
on Commercial St. to put up a brick building.
July 16, 1855—Supervisors appropriated $1,150 to buy lot on
Pine Street from Abbott & Edwards for portion of courthouse site
Aug 31, 1855—Was erecting a 3-story brick building at Pine
and Commercial.
Sept 21, 1855—Grand soireé at Abbott’s Hall.
Sept 28, 1855 —Abbott’s wood building at Pine and Commercial was being raised to match the Pine St. grade, and a
plank sidewalk was being built between Commerical and
Broad sts.
Jan 1, 1856—He and Thomas Edwards had a furniture and
upholstery business at 34 Commercial St. Had borrowed
$6000 from Edward Kelsey.
May 5, 1856—Defeated for city trustee (AMER).
July 19, 1856—Lost $42,000 in Nevada City fire.
Aug 8, 1856—He and Edwards resumed business on Pine St.,
next to A. Block.
Aug 16, 1856—Nearly killed when he fell from outside seat
on stage between Nevada City and Sacramento.
Sept 6, 1856—Lost his promissory note to Kelsey that showed
credits for interest payments on back side.
Nov 4, 1856—Election judge at Nevada City precinct.
April 6, 1857— Abbott & Edwards property was attached by
Whitney & Co. of San Francisco.
June 5, 1857—Sheriff told to sell four lots and buildings on
Commercial Street, two more on Pine, and some mining
shares, to satisfy judgment of $7,379 against him in favor
of Jonas G. Clark and G. B. Wilbur.
Oct 8, 1857— Appointed to Nevada City Board of Trustees.
April 27, 1858—Thief broke into his house on Commercial
Street.
May 23, 1858—Lost $6,000 in city fire.
Oct 8, 1858—On grand jury.
March 8, 1859—His lot and building at Pine and Commercial
sts. was sold at sheriff's auction to Edward Kelsey.
April 20, 1859— Nominated for city trustee (DEM).
Dec 26, 1860— Abbott, Rogers et al sued C. W. Mulford et al.
July 6, 1861—Elected delegate to Republican county convention.
Oct 27, 1861—Married Mary Call (of NH) in San Francisco.
May 4, 1863—Elected city trustee.
May 2, 1864—Reelected city trustee.
Aug 5, 1864—On grand jury.
May 3, 1865—On grand jury.
1880 — Officer in Oustomah Lodge, IOOF.
May 18, 1891—Obituary appeared in Nevada Transcript.

June 1869—Embezzled thousands of dollars while serving as
deputy to County Clerk-Auditor George K. Farquhar.
March 1872—Board of Supervisors ordered audit of books
after John J. Rogers who served as County Clerk and ex
officio Auditor between March 1870 and 1872, informed
them of his discovery of the thefts. Members of Abbey’s
family (who were related to Farquhar) had quietly replaced large sums before news became public.

Dec 27, 1863—Officer in Garizim Lodge 43, B’nai Brith at
Grass Valley.
Dec 17, 1865—Died at Grass Valley, age 42 or 45. Buried in
Jewish Cemetery at Grass Valley

April 16, 1858—Prop. of fruit store 2 doors below A. Block
& Co. on Commercial St., Nevada City, Nevada County.
May 23, 1858—He and Lockridge lost $400 worth of fruit in
city fire.
May 28, 1858—He and Lockridge reopened business at the
old stand.
