Lives of Nevada County Pioneers (version 20120) Sept 8, 1860 —Member Breckinridge Democratic county committee. March 9, 1861—Broke his leg while wrestling with man at his ranch. June 7, 1861—Son Charles Henry died. July 18, 1861—Held ball at his hotel. June 12, 1863— Miss Dobbs offered to sell her house, lot and stable, used for residence and grocery, across street from Arnold’s hotel. July 22, 1863—Delegate from Lake City to Union county convention. Oct 13, 1864—Held ball at Lake City to benefit the Sanitary Commission. Dec 16, 1864—Received telegram that his brother Samuel, aged 38, had died in San Francisco. Dec 12, 1866 —His hotel had been taken over by P. A. Paine, formerly of Zinc House, Nevada County. SAMUEL ARNOLD (c1826-1864) ca 1826—Born. Brother of Henry Arnold. —Came to Calif. ca 1852—Came to Nevada County. Lived at Nevada City and Woolsey’s Flat. ca 1860—Moved to Gold Hill, Utah Territory, with wife and children. ca 1864—Moved to San Francisco with family because of poor health. Dec 15, 1864—Died at San Francisco. Left wife and several children. Dr.J.L.ASAY( ) —Was a surgeon in the Union Army in Civil War. Had practiced both medicine and surgery. Nov 1, 1867—Dental partner of Dr. Kent at Nevada City. 1868 — Dental partner of Dr. Davis in Grass Valley. July 7, 1868— Elected President of Eagle Hose Company No. 2 at Grass Valley. Aug 1, 1868—His dental office was at No. 40 (or 49) Main Street near the Wisconsin Hotel in Grass Valley. Oct 15, 1868 — Returned from 2-month trip to Philadelphia. May 1869— Moved his practice to Smartsville. Oct 11, 1869—Married to Miss Fannie Landrigan of (Timbuctoo) at Marysville by Rev. Father Lynch. Aug 4, 1870—Was injured in a buggy accident at Sucker Flat. Dec 6, 1870—Had moved to North San Juan where he was practicing medicine. Feb 1871—Was preparing a fine house in which to live with his wife at North San Juan. June 9, 1872—Tried unsuccessfully to save life of North San Juan man who mistakenly had swallowed poison. Oct 4, 1872—Had returned to Grass Valley and would resume practice of dentistry. ISRAELASH( ) —Came to Calif. 1855—Partner of John Parker at Grass Valley, Nevada County. Sept 13, 1855—He and Parker lost $3,500 in Grass Valley fire just before their new brick building was completed. Oct 9, 1855— About ready to move into new store with goods saved from fire. Jan 22, 1856—Dissolved partnership with Parker. 10
LEOASH( -_ ) —Came to Calif. June 4, 1854—Bought J. Grauman’s interest and became partner of C. Josephson at Kentucky Store, Main Street, Nevada City, Nevada County. Aug 1, 1855—Sold interest back to Grauman and left city. April 23, 1856—Elected Sec’y of Nevada Hebrew Society. Mr. H. A. ASHBURN (1821-__) 1821—Born in Norway. 1849— Migrated to Chicago, Illinois, and worked as a clerk. 1851—Visited Calif., Sandwich (Hawaiian) Islands and Australia. 1853— Came to Nevada County, Calif. Mined and worked as clerk and bookkeeper. 1866—Deputy tax collector of Nevada County. June 1875—He and partner Otis Baker were mining at Scott’s Flat when tunnel collapsed while they were outside eating lunc. 1880—Lived at Scott’s Flat and owned 118 acres of mining land with his partner, Otis Baker. WILLIAM C. ASHER (— +) (CITIZENS) —Came to Calif. April 8, 1853—Prop. of Phelps Hotel, Nevada City, Nevada County. May 27, 1853—He and John S. Foster had an ice cream saloon at Nevada City. Aug 9, 1853—Sent pitcher of lemonade (made by Samuel Hervey at his saloon) to Nevada Journal office. Sept 23, 1853—Prop. of Phoenix Saloon in new building at plaza, between new post office and Adams & Co.’s new building. Also was prop of Phelps Hotel and had a ranch near Nevada City where he grew potatoes. Oct 14, 1853 —Grew a radish 12” long and 19” around. Oct 24, 1853—Elected foreman of Nevada Hook and Ladder Co. Jan 21, 1854—Defeated for city marshal (CITIZENS). April 28, 1854—Journal reader questioned how Asher could run for marshal of Nevada City while owning a ranch near Grass Valley. May 1, 1854—Defeated for Nevada City marshal. Nov 29, 1855—Defeated again for Nevada City marshal. July 19, 1856—Lost $3,000 in notes and accounts in Nevada City fire. May 20, 1857—Was jailer at Nevada City when prisoner Frank Moore attacked him during escape attempt. Sept 26, 1857—Examined in Henry Plumer’s preliminary hearing. Dec 21,1857—Witness at trial of Plumer for murder of John Vedder. Sept 7, 1859—Elected constable for Nevada twp. June 6, 1861—Director of Pennsylvania Fire Co. No. 2. Aug 15, 1862—Badly hurt in explosion while working on bridge approach at Wall’s Crossing. Body burned and lost one and possibly two fingers.
