Lives of Nevada County Pioneers 34 CHARLES H. CONAWAY (18451878) 1845—Born, probably in Baltimore. Son of Carville Conaway and Elizabeth O’Connor. 1860—Living in Baltimore with John (27), Ruth (22) and Taylor (2) Conaway. 1870— Living with a lawyer and family in Caroline County, Maryland. May 1870—First family reunion in 20 years took place at his father’s home in Grass Valley. Visitors included children and grandchildren from all parts of the country, including Baltimore and Sacramento. 1871—Employed as a printer by Sacramento Record. April 25, 1871— Married at San Francisco to Mannie L. Wilder of San Francisco, . March 3, 1874—Son born in Sacramento. Jan 20, 1878—Died of consumption. Buried in family cemetery at Grass Valley. GEORGE W. CONAWAY (1843_) 1843—Born in Baltimore, Maryland, on of Carville Conaway and Elizabeth O’Conner. Nov 1851—Father came to Grass Valley, Nevada County. 1852—Older brother James C. came to Grass Valley. 1857—Mother and sisters came to Grass Valley. George may have come with them or earlier with brother(s0. Feb 1875—Installed as an officer in Fidelity Division of the Sons of Temperance at Grass Valley. In the same month, he was installing a water pipe in front of Jacob Wilhelm’s butcher shop. April 1875—Pitcher and treasurer for the True Blue Base Ball Club at Grass Valley. June 1875—On the Invitation Committee for planning Grass Valley Fourth of July program. Dec 1875— Had been elected Copying Clerk at the California State Senate. JAMES C. CONAWAY (1835__ ) 1835—Born in Baltimore, Maryland, son of Carville Conaway and Elizabeth O’Conner. 1852—Came to Grass Valley, Nevada County, to join father. July 1875—On Coroner's Jury at Grass Valley. June 3, 1907— Attended old pioneers reunion at Grass Valley. 1911—Member of Grass Valley Pioneer Club. STEPHEN CONAWAY (1839-1870) June 8, 1839—Born. —Came to Calif. June 1867—Miner at Quaker Hill, Nevada County. Member of I.0.0.F. March 14, 1870—Died at Red Dog. Buried in Red Dog cemetery. BEN. T. CONGER ( -_ ) —Came to Nevada County, Calif. —Owner of Spring Waterworks at North San Juan. Oct 1863—Taxable income $375. Sept 11, 1864—Arrived at Nevada City from San Francisco and described the Antelope explosion at San Francisco Bay.
Sept 25, 1864 — Offered to sell the Spring Waterworks at North San Juan because he was going to move to San Francisco. JOSEPH S.CONN ( -_ ) (WHIG) —Came to Nevada County, Calif. June 24, 1853—Delegate from Grass Valley twp. to Whig county convention. Sept 7, 1853—Defeated for district attorney (WHIG). Jan 7, 1854—He and others invited A. A. Sargent to complimentary supper at Grass Valley. March 23, 1854—Law partner of Mr. Montgomery, Mill St. Grass Valley. July 20, 1854— Chosen delegate to Whig state convention. Sept 13, 1855—Lost $7,000 in Grass Valley fire. SAMUEL CONNELL ( -_ ) (IND) —Came to Nevada County, Calif. Dec 28, 1853—Stovepipe spark from his and Vernard’s Broad St. store ignited roof fire in Nevada City. June 27, 1854—Samuel D. Connell elected officer in Cadets of Temperance. Jan 1, 1856—Resided at 136 Broad St. Grocery store at 44 Broad St. Nevada City. July 19, 1856—Lost $5,000 when store and house burned in Nevada City fire. Aug 8, 1856—Back at his old location in new building. May 4, 1857—Defeated for Nevada City trustee. Operated a grocery at 44 Broad St. May 23, 1858—Lost $2,000 when the store burned in Nevada City fire. April 6, 1858—On grand jury. Aug 14, 1858—Delegate to Independent county convention. Jan 26, 1859—Aaron Sargent won a $1,593.50 judgment against Connell; sheriff to sell the lot formerly occupied by Connells grocery on Feb 19. Aug 15, 1859—Insolvency hearing in District Court. Oct 21, 1859—Was fitting up his old stand at Broad St. to open a boot and shoe store. Nov 23, 1859—Called for a meeting on Dec 3, 1859 to consider building a wagon road from Nevada City to Washoe. July 6, 1860—On grand jury. 1860—Taxpayer in Nevada township. Mrs. JOHN CONNOLLY( -_ ) —Came to Calif. 1865—Wife of John Connolly of Massachusetts Hill, Grass Valley, Nevada County. Owned stock in the North Star and Stockbridge quartz mines. WILLIAM J. CONNOR ( -_ ) —Married Isabella __. —Came to Calif. July 29, 1853—Had started a stage line between Nevada City and Grass Valley, Nevada County. Oct 14, 1853—He and D. B. Wentworth started a stage line between Nevada City and Downieville.
