Lives of Nevada County Pioneers (version 20120) rectly predicted that the apparent westward dip of the ore ledge in the Ophir mine (on the Comstock) was a false one, and that the ledge would be found to turn toward the east, following the trend of the mountain slope, at no great distance underground. (His prediction was not taken seriously at the time, according to Elliot Lord in Comstock Mining and Miners.) Aug 26, 1860—Accompanied Dr. Idleberg of San Francisco on a trip to Washoe mining district. Idleberg was interested in erecting a silver reduction works near Virginia City and was looking over the freight routes. Oct 1860—He and James Walsh were taxpayers in Grass Valley twp. Oct 17, 1861—Lady Jane Franklin (widow of the famous Arctic explorer) and her niece, Miss Sophia Cracroft, accepted Atwood’s invitation to stay at his Grass Valley house for several days. May 10, 1862—Furnished a record of rainfall at Grass Valley to the National newspaper, showing unusually high monthly totals from January to May 10, 1862. Oct 19, 1862—Son Melville, 19, died at Grass Valley. April 6, 1863—Elected vestryman and senior warden at Emmanuel Church. June 1863— Moved with family to San Francisco. Nov 9, 1864—Included as defendant in a suit against D. Davidson for $9,379.28. Plaintiffs were J. A. Donahue, William C. Ralston, Ralph S. Fritz and Eugene Kelley (Donahue, Ralston & Co.). April 7, 1865—Sued William Ralston. May 12, 1865—Property, including ranch, mining claims, etc., was to be sold at auction. to satisfy adverse judgment. 1866— Wife Jane died and was buried in San Francisco. June 14, 1870—Was said to have purchased the St. Patrick mine in Placer county from Charley F. Easton, along with Capt. S. W. Lee and W. H. V. Cronise, and were working it with John Townsend, former foreman at the Empire mine. —Built a house at Sausalito. —Moved to Berkeley. April 23, 1898 —Died in Berkeley. ALBERT AUGUSTINE (1822_) 1822—Born in England. —Married Dorothy (b. 1826 in England). —Came to United States. —Traveled west to Oregon. 1848 — Daughter Nancy Ann born in Oregon. —Came to Calif. Sept 1850—Operated boarding house at Nevada City. Nov 16, 1850—Listed as trader at Nevada City; his boarders included Ohio natives Alex. Cochrane (45), Thos. Cochrane (21), and John R. McClure (39). Dec 9, 1850— Augustine family left Nevada City for lowa. 12 OSSIAN G.AULD( ) —Came to Nevada County, Calif. from Brunswick, New Jersey. March 14, 1861—Had painted a pine door so it resembled oak.
April 22, 1861—On Nevada County grand jury. Aug 14, 1861—Refused to paint a rebel flag for teamster. Jan 29, 1862—On music committee to raise relief funds for Sacramento flood sufferers. March 1, 1862—Two of his oil paintings were on display in George E. Withington’s shop at Nevada City. June 8, 1862—Elected to governing committee of the Nevada Bible Society. March 18, 1865—Had been commissioned lieutenant in a volunteer militia somewhere in Calif. MATTHIAS AULT (c1827_ ) ca 1827—Born in New York state. —Came to Calif. May 1852—Came to Little York, Nevada County, and mined. Jan 12, 1853—Shot and killed Richard Fisher, a town bully, at Little York. WILLIAM C. AULT (c1817-1866) (DEM) ca 1817—Born. —Came to Calif. —Early pioneer in Nevada County. May 7, 1857—Spoke in favor of closing businesses in Rough and Ready on the Sabbath. July 13, 1859—Money raised for victims of Rough and Ready fire was given to him and David Bovyer and Judge E. W. Roberts to distribute. Sept 8, 1860—Nominated to Democratic county committee from Rough and Ready. June 20, 1863—Chosen delegate to Democratic state conv. Sept 7, 1864—Delegate at Democratic state convention. Sept 3, 1866—Died at Rough and Ready, age 49. FRANK AUMER( -_ ) —Came to Calif. Dec 7, 1864—He and Fred Bulacher were proprietors of Center Market on Commercial Street, Nevada City, Nevada County. June 1867—Had a butcher shop at Allison Ranch, Nevada County. —Married . June 25, 1876—Son born at Nevada City. 1880—Had a butcher shop at Grass Valley. Mr. F.W.AUSTIN( -_ ) —Came to Calif. Sept 22, 1853— Offered to sell his livery stable, barn, corral and dwelling house on Main St., Grass Valley, Nevada County. Sept 29, 1853—Offered to sell 150-acre fenced ranch and house near old McCourtney crossing on Bear River. Sept 13, 1855— Austin lost $2,000 in Grass Valley fire. June 14, 1858—On grand jury. Oct 1864—Owned tract of land in Rough and Ready twp. worth $200, and a house and lot worth $200 in Nevada twp., on south side of Brush Creek at upper crossing.
