April 1, 1852—L. B. Austin & Co. had sold the Grass Valley Hotel to Charles W. Smith and A. S. Olin. Sept 4, 1852—Delegate to Whig party county convention from Sugar Loaf precinct, Nevada township. Jan 21, 1853—His ranch mentioned in “Shelby” Flat mining district boundaries. April 15, 1853—Advertised good ranching at “Shelby” Flat Ranch, one mile north of Nevada City. June 24, 1853—Delegate to Whig county convention. Nov 4, 1853—Charter member of Oustomah Lodge 16, Odd Fellows at Nevada City. Jan 5, 1855—N.G. of Oustomah Lodge 16. July 8, 1849— Arrived in San Francisco, Calif. Summer 1849—Mined for gold on the American River. Oct 1849—Left Mormon Island, traveled to Johnson’s Ranch, camped with Doc Caldwell. Oct 10, 1849—At Caldwell’s Upper Store on Deer Creek. Winter 1849-50 — At Sacramento. Feb 1850—Returned to Deer Creek and Caldwell’s Upper Store. May 1850—Left camp (now called Nevada City). 1856— Visited Nevada City, Nevada County, for first time in six years. July 1856—San Juan residents chose Avery to be first postmaster at San Juan North, Nevada County. Dec 19, 1856—Member Manzanita Lodge 102, F&AM. —Operated drug store in North San Juan. Aug 21, 1858—Took over the North San Juan Star from J. P. Olmstead and changed name to Hydraulic Press. Jan 1859— Offered to sell drug store at North San Juan. June 5, 1860—Sold interest in the Hydraulic Press to James Allen and went to Marysville to edit the Appeal. March 5, 1861—Visited Nevada City on way to Marysville after going to inauguration ball at North San Juan. 1861—Married Miss Mary A. Fuller (from Michigan). Sept 4, 1861—Elected Calif. state printer (REP). Oct 28, 1861—Merged the Marysville National Democrat with Marysville Appeal and continued as editor. —Received honorary degree from College of California. 1863 — Editor of the San Francisco Bulletin.
