Probably the son of John and Sarah Griffiths Dennen, who married at Grass Valley on May 14, 1861. —Worked as a miner and for railroad. ca 1888— Appointed night watchman. ca 1890— Appointed to fill unexpired term of Grass Valley Marshal Pascoe. 1892—Elected Grass Valley marshal. 1894—Reelected Grass Valley marshal. JOHN DENNEN ( -_ ) —Came to Grass Valley, Calif. May 14, 1861—Married Sarah A. Griffiths at Grass Valley April 2, 1862—Son Frank E. born at Grass Valley. July 9, 1868 — Officer in Grass Valley Lodge, No. 12, I.0.0.F. June 1870—Entered bid to build bridge over Wolf Creek at junction of Neal street and Colfax Avenue. Nov 11, 1872—Son born at Grass Valley. Mr.J.W.DENNISON( -_ ) —Camed to Nevada County, Calif. March 10, 1858— Appointed road overseer for Humbug District 18. April 6, 1859—Estate co-executor (with Capt. Irwin) for Charles Smith, who died at North Bloomfield in Nevada County. June 7, 1859—Justice of the peace; held inquest into death of G. K. Reed. Sept 7, 1859—Elected justice of peace for Bloomfield twp. Oct 3, 1859—Elected associate justice of Court of Sessions. Dec 3, 1859—Member of committee to organize a wagon road from Nevada City to Washoe mines. March 17, 1860—Resigned as justice of the peace and was replaced by James Marriott. CHARLES DENZER (DENTZER) (_—Came to Nevada County, Calif. Jan 26, 1854— Had a grocery and bakery at Grass Valley. Sept 4, 1855—Wanted to close his business and move to San Francisco Bay area for health reasons. Sept 13, 1855—Lost $2,500 in Grass Valley fire. Jan 1, 1856 —Prop. of a bakery at 45 Commercial St., Nevada City. Sept 3, 1856—Delegate to Democratic county convention. Dec 13, 1856—Won a judgment against Bernhard Franz and Reinhard Esche for $1,600; sheriff's auction scheduled for this date to sell property at 12 and 14 Commercial St. ) (DEM) GEORGE W. DERRICKSON (__-1863) —Twin brother of Benjamin Derrickson. —Came to Calif. —First proprietor of Marysville Appeal. —Lived at Freeman’s Crossing between Yuba and Nevada counties. —Printer on newspaper at Nevada City, Nevada County. Oct 1, 1862—Had purchased printing equipment at San Francisco and was taking it to Washoe valley to establish the Washoe Times newspaper. Oct 11, 1862—James Allen of Nevada County was named editor of the Washoe Times. Jan 23, 1863—Killed at Washoe City by Horace F. Swayze, who was convicted and sentenced to 3 years in prison. 17

Oct 3, 1861—Had organized volunteer militia company at Grass Valley, Nevada County; when they didn’t elect him captain he withdrew. Oct 5, 1861—Opened recruiting office at Floyd’s saloon in Grass Valley. Aug 16, 1862—Member of Lincoln & Johnson Club at Grass Valley. April 9, 1864— Admitted to practice in District Court. Sept 10, 1864—Angry at members of Union party; says he will vote against Lincoln and Johnson. July 1, 1865— Attended People’s Union county convention. April 2, 1868— Offered to help landholders obtain title to railroad lands. July 10, 1868—Spoke at Colfax Democratic meeting; said he had worked and voted for Republicans during war, but couldn’t stand their corrpution and hypocrisy any longer. June 23, 1869—Married Elizabeth A. Dunham (b. 1835 in Ohio) at Nevada City. July 16, 1870—Admitted to practice before Calif. Supreme Court. Dec 14, 1872—Member of newly organized Grass Valley Stock Board. ) (UNION, PEOPLE’S, DEM) Dr.S.A.DEUEL( ) —Came to Calif. 1874—Practiced medicine at Grass Valley. July 17, 1874—Left Grass Valley and moved to Auburn to take charge of the Placer County hospital. Mr. J.H. DEWEY( ) —Came to Calif. March 1868—Leader of a band at Grass Valley, Nevada County. Mr. E.F. DEYOUNG( -_ ) —Came to Calif. Jan 31, 1852—Agent for Thompson & Brown’s beef market, Main St. Nevada City. May 1, 1852—Prop. of American Market, Main St. Jan 7, 1853—He and T. S. Williams operated the American & City Market at Nevada City, Nevada County. March 4, 1853—Ended partnership with T. S. Williams, who was to settle debts and demands. March 25, 1853—Opened a new grocery and provisions store on Commercial St. Sept 30, 1853—Chosen delegate to Pacific Railroad convention in San Francisco on Oct. 3. Nov 2, 1852— Had catered supper for Mrs. Bagert’s ball near Nevada City. Jan 1, 1854—Nevada City post office had a letter for him. March 31, 1854—Offered to sell or rent the De Young House, a boarding house and trading post on Rush Creek, by Downieville Road, 2.5 miles from Nevada City. July 1854—Charles Hall & Charles Rapp moved into De Young’s old store. Jan 25, 1856—Clerk in P. Hendrickson’s provision store. Sept 1856—Owner of grocery, provision, liquors, crockery and general merchandise store at 65 Broad St.
