Overland Monthly magazine, along with Anton Roman,
Bret Harte, William C. Bartlett, Samuel Williams, George
B. Merrill, and Noah Brooks.
1872—Became managing editor of Overland Monthly.
1873—Retired from Bulletin because of poor health.
Aug 1874— Appointed Minister to China by President U. S.
Grant.
Nov 8, 1875—Died in Pekin, China.

June 8, 1861—Temporary chairman of Republican county
convention at Nevada City. Chosen delegate to Republican state convention.
Sept 4, 1861—Reelected to state assembly (REP).
June 1867—Not listed in Nevada County.
Nov 13, 1902—Died at Sacramento.
EDWIN W. AVERY (1810-1879)
1810—Born in New Jersey.
1832— Married Emeline (b. 1815 in Vermont).
—Came to Calif.
Spring 1851—Partner with Edgar Mills in wholesale and retail store on Main St., Nevada City, Nevada County.
June 23, 1851—Sold his interest to Mills, who continued business under firm name of Avery & Mills.
Jan 1856—Prop. of Broad St. Hotel, 101 Broad St., one door
below Methodist Episcopal Church.
Jan 21, 1859—J. N. Turner won a $252.82 judgment against
Avery and his wife; sheriff was directed to sell the hotel
and lot on Feb 12, 1859.
Sept 13, 1859—Wife filed declaration of intent to carry on the
business of hotel keeping, bar keeping, dairy ranching and
gardening in Nevada County.
—Moved to Crystal Springs.
Oct 1864—Owned house and tract of land worth $500 two
miles east of Nevada City on Red Dog road.
ca 1865—Returned to Nevada City.
1870 — Was a teamster living with wife in Nevada City; $1,000
real estate, $250 personal property.
Jan 14, 1879—Died in Nevada City. Survived by widow 65
years old, a sister-in-law, Mrs. J. B. Gray, and a nephew,
E. W. Avery Jr.
ISAAC A. AVERY (
—Came to Calif.
Aug 1854— Avery & Co. started tunnel into Yankee Hill near
Red Dog, Nevada County.
Dec 14, 1855—Owned three water ditches from Missouri
Canyon delivering 300 miners inches per day.
June 6, 1856—Was doing well at Yankee Hill.
March 2, 1860—Partner of Foster K. Smith when he purchased Chalk Bluff Sawmill and lots and buildings at
Chalk Bluff village from Benjamin D. Bowers, Catherine
and Herb. Bowers. Place was known as Smith & Avery’s
Gardens and Smith & Avery’s Sawmill.
Aug 22, 1860—Smith and Avery were taxpayers in Little York
twp.
Oct iB 1861—Died at Chalk Bluff village, Little York twp.
On July 9, 1863, the sheriff sold Foster Smith’s interest
to Benjamin Taylor for $813.55, and on August 13, 1864, the
public administrator auctioned Avery's property at Chalk Bluff
sawmill. J. J. Collins paid $1,384 for Avery's 1/4 interest in two
houses and lots on west side of Main st., above saloon, plus all
property on east side of street at Chalk Bluff village, including
sawmill and Smith & Avery's gardens.

June 6, 1856—Had leased old Nevada County court house
and was fitting it up as a daguerreotype studio.
Nov 4, 1856—Defeated for state assembly (REP).
Aug 12, 1857— Attended Republican county convention.
