Lives of Nevada County Pioneers (version 2021) May 3, 1866—Returned to Nevada City from Meadow Lake. Dec 21, 1869—He and Alex Gault killed a lynx on ridge north of Sugar Loaf near Nevada City. TATNALL BAILEY( -_ ) (DEM) —Came to Calif. 1857—Druggist at 32 Main Street, Nevada City, Nevada County. Feb 5, 1858—Succeeded by S. M. Bailey as druggist at 32 Main Street. Sept 1, 1858—Defeated for state Assembly from Nevada County (DEM). JOHN BAILY( ) —Came to Calif. 1861—He and John Bazely had a saloon at 38 Commercial Street, Nevada City, Nevada County. CHARLES H.BAIN( ) —Came to Calif. May 2, 1853 —Bain, Robert Davidge, James FitzJames, George Dornin, and Henry Crandall were managers of a May Day Party at the United States Hotel, Nevada City, Nevada County. June 1853— May have designed and/or built house known as Bourbon Lodge on Nevada St. for FitzJames and Crandall. Nov 2, 1853—Architect and builder with office on Main St. above the American Market. May 5, 1854—Carpentry shop and architectural office on Main St., one door above Dr. Hunt’s office. Summer 1854—May have built houses for Niles Searls and Charles Mulford. April 13, 1855—Partner of J. R. Scranton, same address. May 25, 1855—Member of firm of Bain, Scranton & Israel. (T. T. Israel was a brickmaker and builder.) Jan 1856—Bain, Scranton & Israel office was at 54 Main St.; they made their own bricks. 1856—Bain, Williamson & Dawley owned Bourbon Lodge. May 1, 1856—On arrangements committee for ball at Frisbie’s Theatre. July 19, 1856—Firm lost $5,000 in tools and buildings in city fire. July 20, 1856—Ended partnership with Scranton. Aug 23, 1856—Bain and Israel received $18,558 contract to rebuild Nevada County courthouse, gutted by city fire. Fall 1856—Built first Nevada Theatre for Lyman P. Frisbie, to replace Frisbie’s Theatre and Concert Hall, destroyed by city fire. Dec 1, 1856—Frisbie’s Nevada Theatre opened. Feb 12, 1857—Fined $20 for nonattendance as juror. Feb 21, 1857—Sheriff ordered to sell Nevada Theatre to satisfy a judgment won by Albert Harvill against Bain & Scranton. April 18, 1857—Constable ordered to sell Nevada Theatre and Bain’s workshop (house and lot in rear of Dr. Larks drugstore) to satisfy judgment of $193.35 won by Winter & Groce. Oct 23, 1857 —Signed a benefit letter at Nevada City. Feb 9, 1858—Sheriff ordered to sell Nevada Theatre lot to satisfy $546 judgment won by Amos W. Riley against the owners. Sept 28, 1860—Was living at Portland, Oregon.
DANIEL SHERMAN BAKER (1824_) 1824—Born at Edgecomb, Lincoln Co., Maine. Dec 1849— Arrived at San Francisco, Calif. Had sailed around the Horn. Feb 11, 1850—Came to Nevada City, Nevada County, and mined. 1851—Prop. of Iowa Store, Broad St. —Married Asneth . Jan 1856 —He and Brown operated a grocery on Bridge St. May 25, 1858—Lost $1000 when his store burned. June 1858 — Member Nevada Rifle Co. Dec 1858—On county grand jury. —Son Edward born at Nevada City. —Three daughters born at Nevada City. Oct 1860—Taxpayer in Nevada twp. Baker & Wymore also were taxpayers. March 14, 1861—Fourth Sergeant of Nevada Rifle Co. May 4, 1863 —Elected Nevada City Trustee. April 11, 1864—Defeated for position as Nevada Fire Dept. Chief Engineer. Oct 1864— Owned 2 houses and lots worth $800 on north side of Factory St. next to Hughes residence. Baker & Wymore had a brick grocery and provisions store worth $2,000 and $2,000 in supplies on south side of Broad St. Dec 13, 1864—Elected trustee of Nevada Theatre Co. June 1865—Elected to Fire Dept. Board of Trustees from Pennsylvania Fire Co. Dec 25, 1865—Son S. D. born at Nevada City. Nov 1, 1866—Trustee of Nevada Theatre Co. June 1867—Baker and J. A. Martin operated a grocery, feed, and shakes store at 73 Broad, corner of Bridge St. Aug 14, 1867—Son born at Nevada City. Dec. 13, 1868—Son S. D. died at Nevada City. July 1869—Son Bradford born. Sept 10, 1869—Son Bradford died at Nevada City. —Hauled freight from Colfax to Nevada City until narrow gauge railroad was completed in 1876. 1876—Began hauling freight from Nevada City depot to local merchants with aid of son Edward. —Served three terms as Nevada City trustee. 1895—President of Nevada City trustees. Had one son (Edward), 3 daughters (Nellie, Lettie and Emma), and 2 or 3 grandchildren. OTIS BAKER (1829_) 1829—Born in Ohio. 1837— Went to Michigan with parents. 1851—Came to Nevada County, Calif. and mined. 1852—Mined at Sonora, Calif. 1854— Returned to Nevada County and mined. June 1875—He and H. A. Ashburn were mining at Scott’s Flat when tunnel collapese while they were outside eating lunch. 1880—Lived at Scott’s Flat, Nevada County, and owned 117 acres of mining land with partner H. A. Ashburn. Mr.J.R.BALCH( ) 1850s —Came to Calif. June 3, 1907—Came from Rough and Ready, Nevada County, and attended old pioneers reunion at Grass Valley.
