Lives of Nevada County Pioneers (version 2020) CHARLEY FOY( ) —Came to Calif. July 8, 1854—Opened a new saloon at Grass Valley, Nevada County. Aug 3, 1854—Had a dog pen behind his Grass Valley saloon, where he intended to stage dog fights, rat killing and other sports. WILLIAM FRANCY( -_ ) —Came to Calif. July 1861—Partner of James M. Lakenan and M. C. Taylor in new iron foundry on Mill Street in Grass Valley, Nevada County. Mr. J.H.FRANKLIN( -_ ) 1850s—Came to Calif. June 3, 1907 —Attended old pioneers reunion at Grass Valley, Nevada County. BERNHARD FRANZ(-_ +) — Came to Calif. May 9, 1855—Signed a benefit letter for Anna Bishop at Nevada City, Nevada County. 1855—Erected a brick building on Commercial Street. Jan 1, 1856—Lived in a house on Main Street. He and Reinhold or Reinhard Esche operated a liquor store at 16 Commercial St. April 11, 1856—He and Esche had a saloon and provisions store at Humbug City (North Bloomfield). July 19, 1856—He and Esche lost $3,000 in Nevada City fire. Dec 13, 1856—Sheriff’s sale of lot and brick building on Commercial St. to satisfy $600 judgment against Franz in favor of Charles Denzer. May 29, 1859—Shot by Magenberg at Alleghany when Franz refused to let him marry his daughter. JAMES FRASER (1821-_ ) 1821—Born in Scotland. 1831—Migrated with parents to Canada. —Engaged in farming. 1846—Married Catherine Geddes (b. in Scotland). Feb 1847—Daughter Agnes born. Nov 1849—Daughter Sarah G. born. 1852—Came to Nevada County, Calif., via Isthmus of Panama and mined. 1860— Moved to 160-acre farm 4 miles from Nevada City and 1% from Blue Tent and farmed. Dec 9, 1861—Daughter Lizzie M. born. 1880—Lived near Blue Tent with wife and 3 daughters on farm (3 children had died). Land and improvements worth $4,000. WALTER FRANCIS FREAR (1863-1948) Oct 29, 1863—Born in Grass Valley, Nevada County, son of Rev. Walter Frear, Grass Valley’s Congregational minister from 1861 to 1864. March 1864—Family moved to Santa Cruz, where Edwin G. Waite visited them and other former Nevada County residents. 1885—Graduated from Yale. 1890—Received law degree from Yale. 1893—Appointed associate justice of the supreme court of newly created provisional government of Hawaii. 13 1896—Assoc. justice on Republic of Hawaii supreme court.
1900— Helped create the Organic Act that formalized annexation of Hawaiian Islands to U.S. —Chief Justice of Hawaiian Supreme Court. Aug 15, 1907—Appointed Territorial Governor of Hawaii. 1913—Term ended. 1948 —Died. THOMAS FREEMAN ( -_) —Came to Calif. 1854—Bought bridge on Middle Yuba River from Thomas Hess. May 8, 1855 —He and McCormick awarded license by Nevada County supervisors to operate toll bridge on South Yuba. 1855—Built a better bridge at Hess Middle Yuba Crossing near mouth of Oregon Creek. Oct 1, 1855—Received one year renewal for bridge at old Hess’ Crossing. 1856—First officer of North San Juan Methodist Church. Sept 9, 1859 —Had built a road between his bridge and Forest City, and had improved road to Camptonville. Dec 8, 1861—Both bridges destroyed by floods. Started to rebuild at lower location. Jan 1862—Unfinished bridge washed away. 1862—Rebuilt bridge at Middle Yuba. Feb 1865—License renewed for his toll bridge on Middle Yuba. Feb 1866—License renewed for his bridge. Feb 6, 1867—License renewed for his bridge. Jan 1875—License renewed for his bridge with rates the same as previous year. 1880—Bridge still intact and owned by Freeman. THOMAS W. FREEMAN (18231823—Born in Kentucky. —Lived in Missouri. 1850—Arrrived in Nevada City, Calif. Oct 27, 1850 —Was a lawyer at Nevada City. April 19, 1851—Office at the American Bakery on Main St. May 26, 1851—Appointed Nevada City, Nevada County, recorder (judge of the municipal court) by the common council, after he was defeated for county judge (DEM). Sept 1851—City was bankrupt; ceased operations and stopped paying officers. Nov 18, 1851—On committee to write constitution for Nevada City vigilance committee. ca 1851-2—Returned to Kentucky. 1861—Served as colonel in Confederate Army. 1864— Union prisoner at Alton, Illinois. ) (DEM) WILLIAM H. FREEMAN (1858_) 1858—Born in Dubuque, Iowa. 1875—Came to Grass Valley, Nevada County, Calif. and learned bakery business from his uncle, Mr. E. Freeman. ca 1880 —Opened his own bakery at Grass Valley. ca 1882—Sold his business after 2 years and worked at W. E. Deamer’s soda works for 9 years. ca 1891—Daniel & Powell bought Deamer’s business and Freeman continued to work for them for 3 more years. 1888—Chief engineer of the Grass Valley fire department. June 1894—Bought his uncle’s bakery on Main St. 1895 —Was living with his family on Main St.
