Nov 19, 1868—Wife Margaret had died in her 49th year at her residence in Quincy, Illinois. JOHN L. GAMBLE(_—Came to Calif. Nov 18, 1850—Signed petition to charter Nevada City. Dec 1855— Partner (and deputy) of Nevada County surveyor John Day, with offices at 5 Main St. in the Grier and Henry Building. May 1856—Sec’y of the American (Know Nothing) party at Nevada City. Nov 4, 1856—Elected county surveyor (DEM). Feb 27, 1857—Resigned as deputy surveyor and left office of John Day. May 1857—Took office as county surveyor. June 26, 1858—Sec’y of Nevada City Democratic primary meeting. June 1, 1862—Disappeared with $3,000 cash belonging to his partner and himself. Aug 17, 1862—Had written from Panama to a Nevada City friend to say he was returning home to see his mother. Had left his partner to pay their debts and he took the gains. Oct 11, 1863—Letter to Nevada City said he had joined the U.S. Navy and been drowned at Brooklyn. WILLIAM GAMBREL( -_ ) 1850—Came to Calif. with Randolph Co. and settled at Randolph Flat, near Rough and Ready. JACOB C. GARBER (_—Born in Virginia. —Came to Calif. June 1, 1861—Chosen delegate from Red Dog to Nevada County Republican convention. June 10, 1862—Had completed construction of his and Mallory’s crushing mill at Red Dog. July 27, 1862—Rescued from SS Golden Gate when it burned at sea. July 22, 1863 —Delegate from Red Dog to Union county conv. Dec 30, 1864— Officer in Brooklyn Odd Fellows Lodge 46 at Red Dog. Sept 4, 1865—Elected Nevada City recorder (UNION). June 22, 1867—He and William Cozzens sold their mine at Missouri Canyon to Neece & West. March 18, 1868— Applied for bankruptcy relief at San Francisco. Nov 20, 1868—Visited Nevada City and said he had moved to Camp Grant in Humboldt County, where he was raising livestock. Nov 22, 1868—Married by Red Dog justice of the peace Robert McGoun to Miss Julia Wheeler at her father’s Nevada County house near Colfax. 1871—Lived at Rohnerville, Humboldt County. —Settled at Garberville (named for him). ) (REP, UNION) JOHN GARBER(_—Came to Calif. Nov 15, 1859—Became law partner of John R. McConnell at Nevada City, Nevada County. Aug 1860—Switched support to Douglas Democrats. June 18, 1861—On county jury. Oct 9, 1861—He and McConnell defended the accused murderer, Warren Myers. Aug 1862—Elected delegate to Breckinridge Democratic state convention. Also on county central committee. Aug 5, 1862— Went to Washoe with partner McConnell. March 24, 1863—Intended to move to Nevada Territory. Sept 24, 1863 — Alfred B. Dibble had gone to Austin to open a law office with him. 1863— George S. Hupp was his law partner at Austin. April 8, 1865—Garber, Hupp and David Ashley (the former Calif. state treasurer) had formed a law firm at Austin. Dec 1865—Married Miss Juliet White at San Francisco; both were residents of Nevada state. June 1867—Was living at the National Exchange hotel, Nevada City. Oct 25, 1868 — Visited Nevada City. (Was he perhaps a relative of Jacob C. Garber, who came to Nevada City in the following month to get married?) Nov 8, 1870—Elected to Nevada supreme court (DEM). Nov 6, 1872—Resigned from supreme court, hoping to be elected to U.S. Senate, but Republican victory ruled that out. ) (DEM)
