Aug 22, 1860—Taxpayer at Little York township, Nevada
County.
Aug 25, 1860—Chosen delegate from Little York township to
Douglas Democratic county convention.
Sept 21, 1862—Lived at Red Dog. Wrote that Patriotic Fund
had raised $500 in 2 hours in that place.
FRANK HALL( -_ )
—Came to Calif.
March 19. 1861—He and A. B. Carley opened a billiard saloon on Commercial St. above Mayers & Coe’s boot store
in Nevada City, Nevada County.
Aug 29, 1861—He and Carley leased the brick building across
street and were fitting it up so they could move their saloon.
Sept 5, 1861—He and Carley had opened the Indian Queen
Saloon in brick building formerly occupied by Cohn & Co.
Feb 10, 1863 —Withdrew from partnership with Carley.
GEORGE W. HALL (c1823-__)
ca 1823—Born. Brother of John E. C. Hall.
—Came to Calif.
Aug 9, 1853—Killed Ling Sing of China below fork of Bear
River and Greenhorn Creek, Nevada County.
Sept-Oct 1853—Tried with his brother, John E. Hall, in district court at Nevada City.
Oct 9, 1853—Found guilty of murder; brother was acquitted.
Nov 19, 1853—Sentenced to hang on Dec 30, 1853.
Dec 14, 1853—Execution suspended by Supreme Court,
pending appeal. Hall remained in jail at Nevada City.
Aug 4, 1854—Petition circulated for governors pardon.
Oct 1, 1854—Calif. supreme court reversed judgment in
landmark ruling, declaring whites could not be convicted
solely upon evidence of Chinese, who were to be considered the same as Indians. Because one of principal white
witnesses was dead and the other could not be found, Hall
was released.
May 1857—Coloma Argus incorrectly reported he had escaped from Coloma jail with other prisoners. Hall actually
was living quietly on Brush Creek near Nevada City.

Jan 1, 1856—Prop. of Young America Saloon, 90 Broad St.,
Nevada City, Nevada County.
1860—Taxpayer in Nevada township.
April 3, 1860—Left Nevada City to visit Virginia City with
Amos T. Laird, John Anderson, and James B. Jeffrey.
July 7, 1864—Elected assistant foreman of Protection Hook &
Ladder Co. No. 1 at Nevada City.
Oct 7, 1868—Died of heart disease at Winnemucca, Nevada.
Buried by firemen at Nevada City.
JOHN E.C.HALL( )
—Came to Calif. Brother of George W. Hall.
Sept-Oct 1853—Tried with brother George in district court
at Nevada City for murder of Ling Sing near fork of Bear
River and Greenhorn Creek.
Oct 9, 1853—Acquitted; brother convicted.
July 2, 1856—His mining claim at Brush Creek was to be sold
to satisfy a $968.88 judgment awarded to John R. McConnell for successfully defending him on the murder charge.

—Came to Calif.
1857—Lived at Nevada City, Nevada County.
Sept 1857— Accused of murdering Mr. Bischoff near Santa
Rosa, but was released for lack of evidence.
Feb 12, 1858—He and Artemas Rogers won judgment of
$215 against E. W. and Lydia Smith. Constable was to sell
Union Hotel at Nevada City.
BENJAMIN W. HALSEY (1826-1853)
1826—Born. Probably related to William Halsey.
—Came to Calif.
July 10, 1852—Sec’y of Shelby [sic] Flat miners district meeting near Nevada City, Nevada County.
Jan 21, 1853—Sec’y of Shelby Flat miners district meeting.
Dec 27, 1853—Died at Nevada City of pneumonia.
Feb 3, 1854— William W. Halsey, American Bakery, Nevada
City, was administrator of his estate.
JEFFREY F. HALSEY (1817-1864?) (DEM)
1817—Born in Virginia.
1849 or 1850—Came to Calif.
Summer 1850—First Master of Lafayette Lodge #29, Nevada
City.
Oct 26 1850—Listed in census at Nevada City.
1851—Lived on Main St., opposite the post office.
May 26, 1851—Elected public administrator of Nevada
County (DEM).
Aug 16, 1851—His name was given as reference in Dr.
Livermore’s adv. (presumably as a dental patient).
Sept 28, 1851—Niles Searls wrote that Halsey had gone to
Cuba, and inferred he was part of a filibustering expedition.
April 1853—District attorney William M. Stewart was acting public administrator weeks before his own term was
to begin.
—May have died at Marysville.
Dec 21, 1864— According to the Marysville Appeal, Halsey’s
remains were moved from the cemetery to the Masonic
burial ground.
