GAVIN HAMILTON (1814-1884)
1814—Born in Maine.
1833— Went to New Orleans.
1850—Married Mary T. Larkin (b. in New York).
1852—Came to Grass Valley, Nevada County, Calif. Built
mills and mined for gold.
May 18, 1853—Wife declared intent to carry on business of
running a boarding house, raising stock and poultry, and
mining. She was building a boarding house on Church St.
—Daughter Theresa G. born.
Dec 1854—Began construction of a concert hall at Grass
Valley.
May 1, 1855—Hamilton Hall opened.
Sept 13, 1855 —Lost $8,000 when hall was destroyed in Grass
Valley fire.
Dec 1, 1858—Hosted opening ball in new concert hall, assisted by Mr. Wilcox.
May 1, 1861—Gave a May party at his hall.
May 11, 1861—Daughter Luci born at Grass Valley.
June 19, 1861—Member of Protection Hose Co. No. 1.
Aug 19, 1861—Daughter Luci McCormick died at Grass
Valley.
May 5, 1862—Elected Grass Valley town trustee.
Feb 14, 1865—He and wife held fancy dress and masquerade
ball at their hall.
May 1, 1865—Elected Grass Valley town trustee.
June 26, 1867—Daughter Marietta born at Grass Valley.
April 8, 1868 — Was going to enlarge Hamilton Hall and construct private boxes on each side of stage.
Oct 21, 1874—Daughter Theresa was married to James
White at her parents’ residence by Rev. Father Phelan of
St. Patrick's Church.
1880—Lived on Church St. with wife and 2 daughters.
ca 1881—Daughter Marietta Etta Hamilton married Edward
J. Overend at Grass Valley in St. Patrick’s Church.
Dec 1, 1881— Hamilton Hall destroyed by fire. Nearby homes
of Hamilton and Dr. McCormick were saved.
Aug 1884—Died at Grass Valley.

—Came to Calif.
May 1, 1856—Bought Simeon S. Hussey’s interest in Artemas
Rogers’ hardware store at Nevada City, Nevada County.
July 19, 1856—Rogers, Hamilton & Co., hardware, lost
$40,000 in Nevada City fire. Saved the new brick building
from exploding by removing explosives.
Aug 22, 1856—Rogers, Hamilton & Co. resumed business at
27 Main St.
Aug 30, 1856—Harrington & Patterson opened a billiard saloon on second floor of his building.
July 15, 1857—Bought out Rogers and became partner of Mr.
H. L. Coye.
Oct 19, 1857—Fined $25 and costs for leaving several grindstones on sidewalk on a Sunday.
May 23, 1858—He and Coye lost $500 in damaged goods in
Nevada City fire.
Jan 26, 1859— Partner of H. L. Coye in the hardware business
at 27 Main St.
July 11, 1859—On grand jury.
Aug 2, 1859—Robber took $944 from his store.
Oct 1859— Assessed worth was $8,300.
March 9, 1860—Had sold business to W. H. Crawford & Co.
June 5, 1860—Took steamer to East; didn’t plan to return.

Jan 1, 1864—Bought George Kidd’s interest in A. H. Hanson
& Co. at 52 Broad St.
Oct 12, 1864—Taxable income for 1863 was $840.
Dec 31, 1864—Dissolved partnership with A. H. Hanson and
C. C. Leavitt.
Jan 2, 1865—Formed partnership with C. C. Leavitt in grocery business.
May 6, 1867—Elected Nevada City trustee.
1867—Partner in Crawford, Leavitt & Co., groceries and
hardware, Broad and Pine streets, Nevada City.
March 1868—Delegate to Union county convention.

Nov 6, 1860—Elected justice of the peace for Rough and
Ready township, Nevada County.
June 24, 1861—Chosen delegate to Democratic state conv.
Aug 1861—Resigned as justice and was replaced by Samuel
B. Davenport.
May 17, 1862—On Democratic county committee from Rough
and Ready township.
JAMES E. HAMLIN (
—Came to Calif.
Jan 1, 1856—Listed as clerk; boarded at United States Hotel,
Nevada City, Nevada County. May have worked for H.
R. Stiles.
Jan 2, 1856—Bought bookstore at SW corner of Broad and
Pine streets from H. R. Stiles and William Bullington.
Feb 22, 1856—The new views of Nevada City would arrive
for subscribers in a few days.
March 21, 1856—Was selling a lithographed view of Nevada
City that showed his name on bookstore in Alban’s brick
building, 53 Broad St.
July 19, 1856—Store survived Nevada City fire.
Aug 8, 1856—Thanked by Alban for helping save building.
Dec 19, 1856—Had a circulating library of 1,000 books, and
sold musical instruments.
May 23, 1858—The brick building occupied by his store again
survived a fire, but he lost $600 when Edward F. Spence’s
store at 21 Commercial St. was burned.
Sept 1858— Assessed worth was $15,000.
Dec 1858—On county grand jury.
Oct 1859— Assessed worth was $17,000.
Jan 11, 1860—On grand jury.
Aug 22, 1860—Taxpayer in Little York township.
Nov 2, 1860—Returned to Nevada City for winter break after attending school at Santa Clara for several months, and
then would return to school.
Oct 1863—Owned brick house and lot worth $6,000 at Pine
and Broad sts.; also frame house and lot worth $1,000
on south side of Commercial St. next to the house of D.
Lachman.
Nov 8, 1863 —His brick building at Broad and Pine was gutted in Nevada City fire.
—Left California.
Nov 21, 1871—Died in Greenville, Pennsylvania.
