Oct 1864—"Ike & Blaze” owned liquors, bar fixtures and saloon furniture worth $500. Taxable income $500 for 1863. May 31, 1868—Married Esther Teresa Hollywood at Nevada City. July 14, 1869—Died at Nevada City. Survived by his wife. SAMUEL W. BEACH( -_ ) —Came to Calif. Jan 1, 1855—Trustee of the Baptist Church at Nevada City, Nevada County, Calif. Supported Rev. O. B. Stone during church dispute. WILLIAM BEAL (BEALE)( -_) —Came to Calif. Dec 15, 1853—Had a blackmith shop at Boston Ravine, Nevada County, opposite Crossett’s Mill. June 6, 1854—He and partner John Mann offered to sell their blacksmith and wagon shop so they could return to the States. Oct 1860—Taxpayer in Grass Valley twp. Dr. H. H. BEALS (1825__) 1825—Born in Massachusetts. — Came to Calif. Sept 1851—City Physician at Nevada City, Nevada County. Office in Hubbard & Hodge’s Law Office & Book Store, Main St. near Coyote. Nov 1, 1851—Testified at examination into Lundy-Dibble duel. Aug 1852—Listed in census at Nevada City (first initial given as “W”). GEORGE W. BEAMAN (1837_ ) 1837—Born in Massachusetts. —Engaged in the “picture business.” 1861—Came to Nevada County, Nevada County, Calif. —Worked as an engineer. 1865— Married Caroline E. Rugg (b. in Mass.). ca 1866-67—Farmed and mined near Nevada City. 1880 —Lived with wife on 160 acres of land 7% miles northwest of Nevada City. Mrs. E.D.BEAN( -_ ) 1857 or earlier —Came to Nevada City, Calif. Oct 2, 1907—Attended pioneer women reception at Nevada City. Was living at Selby Flat, Nevada County. EDWIN F. BEAN (c1835ca 1835—Born in Maine. —Came to Calif. ca March 13, 1858—Married MA. April 10, 1861—Appointed first Republican postmaster at Nevada City, Nevada County, replacing Democratic appointee William C. Bradley. Mr. Mulloy was his assistant postmaster. April 22, 1861—On grand jury at Nevada City. Jan 1, 1862—Reduced rent on post office boxes. Oct 1862—Taxable income $500. March 31, 1863 —Organized militia company with 44 others. April 18, 1863 —Elected 3d sergeant of Nevada Light Guard. June 15, 1863—Delegate to Union county convention. ) (REP, UNION) 9 June 19, 1863—Had been commissioned major and received
a magnificent uniform. Would wear it when Brig. Gen. James Collins called his staff together to review Nevada County military companies. Sept 19, 1863—Went to camp with Gen. Collins and 4th Brigade; Bean was commissary officer. May 25, 1864—Had sold his Boulder Street residence to Martin Luther Marsh. Aug 9, 1864—Had been appointed paymaster by Brig. Gen. Josiah Howell, who had replaced the late James Collins. Oct 1864—Taxable income $500 for 1863. Oct 2, 1864—Had been ordered to organize a battalion consiting of Nevada Light Guard, Grass Valley Union Guard, and the Little York Union Guard, and to arrange for election of a major to lead what would become the 5th Infantry Battalion, 4th Brigade, Calif. Militia. June 1, 1865—Told he would be removed as postmaster at Nevada City. Aug 4, 1865—Replaced as postmaster by Frank Guild. Sept 4, 1865—Elected county assessor (UNION). Oct 9, 1866—Published prospectus for forthcoming history and directory to be compiled by him and J. M. Wolfe. Nov 1866—Became owner and editor of Nevada Daily Gazette. June 1867—Published Bean’s History and Directory of Nevada County. Sept 4, 1867—Elected county assessor (UNION). Oct 1867—Wife (“M. A.”) was close friend of “Lizzie,” the wife of Addison C. Niles. March 13, 1868—Celebrated 10th wedding anniversary with friends. March 28, 1868— Chosen delegate to Union state conv. April 2, 1868—Rumored that he had a physical altercation with Assemblyman John M. Days. Thomas B. Merry bought an interest in Gazette and became its editor. May 25, 1868—Sold the Gazette to Merry. July 1868 — Repossessed the Gazette from Merry. Jan 6, 1869—He and Tallman Rolfe said they would start a newspaper in White Pine district of Nevada. Oct 4, 1869—He and wife returned from visit in East. 1870—Printer living with wife at Nevada City; $2,000 real estate, $1,000 personal property. April 15, 1870—Copies of his 1867 History and Directory of Nevada County were selling at 75 cents each. May 10, 1870—He and J. J. Black had opened an advertising and collection agency in San Francisco. March 1872—He and John I. Glan became to publish the Virginia Evening Chronicle at Virginia City, Nevada. Oct 26, 1872—He had bought John Glan’s interest in the Chronicle. May 2, 1873—H. C. St. became Bean’s new partner. July 14, 1873—Sold interest in Virginia Evening Chronicle to C. C. Stevenson. March 1874— Had received appointment in the U.S. Mint at San Francisco. Aug 1874—Was a member of the firm of J. A. Pendergast & Co., commission merchants, and was trafeling for the firm. Mr.M.BEAN( -_ ) —Came to Calif. Jan 19, 1854— Attorney with office at Golden Gate Hotel in Grass Valley, Nevada County.
