Feb 25, 1859—McAllister moved Keystone Market to the
south side of Commercial Street.
May 28, 1859—Chairman of the Democratic county committee.
Sept 7, 1859—Defeated for sheriff (DEM).
May 7, 1860—Elected Nevada City town trustee.
Aug 25, 1860—Chosen delegate to Douglas Democratic
county convention.
Jan 1861—He and Henry Mackie (or Mackay) finished building a fire house for Pennsylvania Hose Co.
Jan 31, 1861—Had purchased brick building previously occupied by Hurst’s bakery at Main and Commercial sts.
Would move his market there in February.
Feb 7, 1861—Meat market was at 5 Commercial Street, next
door below Keeney’s hardware store.
March 5, 1861—Elijah O. Tompkins became his partner in
Empire market.
April 22, 1861—On grand jury.
May 6, 1861—Elected Nevada City town trustee.
May 14, 1861—Elected president of town trustees.
June 24, 1861—Chosen delegate to Democratic state convention.
July 22, 1862—Signed the Union petition.
Sept 18, 1862—Daughter Amelia M. married Edward P.
Marselus at Kent’s home.
March 31, 1863—One of 45 men who organized militia company at Nevada City.
June 17, 1863— Delegate at Union state convention.
Sept 2, 1863—Elected county sheriff (UNION).
Oct 1863 —Owned brick house and lot worth $2,000 on south
side of Commercial Street next to Downing house; also
house and lot worth $1,500 on south side of High Street;
also stable and lot worth $200 at end of Main Street bridge;
also vacant lot worth $100 on Main Street; also slaughter
house worth $300 on Red Dog Road near Nevada City; 2
wagons and 3 horses worth $500.
Nov 8, 1863— Market burned in Nevada City fire.
Nov 10, 1863—Started a new building on Main Street for his
market.
Nov 12, 1863— Kent, John Birdseye, William Crawford, James
Whartenby, and Mackie & Co. combined to build the new
Union Hotel on Commercial Street.s
March 7, 1864—Took office as sheriff.
June 25, 1864—Had taken bell from burned Catholic church
and temporarily installed it at Baptist church to summon
attendants for District Court.
Oct 12, 1864—Taxable income for 1863 was $2,000.
Sept 4, 1865—Defeated for sheriff (PEOPLES).
Nov 7, 1865—Arrested by Steve Venard for assault and battery.
Nov y 1866—Trustee of Nevada Theatre Co.
June 1867—Butcher; house on Nevada Street.
Aug 1867—City thanked him for gift of a lot on Nevada
Street that made it possible to “build a first-rate bridge
in the place of the crooked, rickety structure that used to
stand at foot of Nevada Street.”
March 28, 1868—Chosen delegate to Union state convention.
Oct 3, 1868— Chairman of Union county committee.
1871—Elected to state senate (REP).
Sept 1874— Was about to leave Nevada County and move to
San Francisco.
Feb 1883—Prop. of Keystone Market on Commercial Street.
May 1884—Took train to San Francisco; disappeared after
registering at the Baldwin Hotel.
Jan 1885—Had returned to San Francisco after touring the

world. Was ill and his wife took care of him at their daughter’s house in Oakland.
Feb 1885—His market, barn, stables and slaughter house
were sold to pay debts.
June 1885—Had reopened Keystone Market at his old stand.
1889 — Wife died.
May 12, 1890—Left Nevada City to go to San Francisco to see
John Cashin about “a money matter,” saying he probably
would not return to Nevada City. Took $100 with him,
most of it obtained when he sold the fixtures of his meat
market. Was despondent and a business friend said “he
has completely lost his nip.”
May 21, 1890 —Committed suicide at San Francisco. His body
was found floating in the bay on the following day.
Dr. WILLIAM H. KENT (c1820-c1900)
ca 1820—Born. Brother of Charles Kent.
1837—Began practicing dentistry.
1840—Married Julia Barnum (b. Dec 6, 1820, Shoreham, Vermont) at Shoreham, Vermont.
—Daughter Lizzie J. born (prob. in Vermont).
ca 1847—Son born.
1852—Came to Calif.
Sept 23, 1853—Dental partner of Dr. S. C. McIntyre at the
U.S. Hotel, Broad Street, Nevada City, Nevada County.
Dec 15, 1853—Dr. McIntyre seems to be practicing by himself
at U.S. Hotel.
Jan 1, 1854—Nevada City post office had a letter for him.
Oct 27, 1854—Practiced dentistry next door to Kilbourn’s Daguerrean Saloon on Commercial Street.
Jan 1, 1856—Partner of Dr. Buckwell at James Churchman’s
house, 52 Main Street.
April 18, 1856—Partner of Dr. Lyons at 52 Main Street.
May 20, 1856 —Left for Atlantic states to get his wife and family.
July 19, 1856—Lost $1,500 in Nevada City fire, including
dwelling and office.
Aug 22, 1856—Had returned via Panama with family.
June 25, 1857—Paid $2,000 to Isaac Ney of Forest City for lot
3 on south side of Commercial Street adjacent to Hirshman
Bros. on east side and William H. Orr on west. Frontage 18’
2” and 30’ deep.
May 23, 1858—Lost $1,100 when two buildings burned in
Nevada City fire.
Aug-Sept 1858—Built brick building at 7 Commercial Street;
opened a drug store with George Kilbourn.
Jan 1859—Son (about 12) was injured in shooting accident.
April 2, 1859—Dissolved partnership with Kilbourn; continued selling drugs.
1860—Taxpayer in Nevada township.
Feb 18, 1862—Dr. Pim, surgeon and physician, opened his
office in Kent’s drug store.
Aug 1, 1863—Elected trustee of Nevada City school district.
Oct 1863—Owned brick house and lot worth $1,000 on south
side of Commercial St. next to house of J. Downing; also
dwelling house and lot worth $500 on west side of Washington Rd.; also house and lot worth $200 on south side of
Main St.; also stock of medicines and drugs worth $800.
Aug 5, 1864—On grand jury.
Nov 14, 1864—On grand jury.
Dec 1864—Daughter Lizzie taught primary school during
absence of regular teacher at Nevada City.
Feb 8, 1865—Had opened a drug store at No. 1 Commercial
Street.
May 3, 1865—On grand jury.
