April 1856—Had made widely quoted remarks about slavery at a Grass Valley, Nevada County, Republican meeting, and suggested “if America didn’t abolish it, the European nations would do it for her.”

Oct 1864—Had addressed a meeting of Union party at Grass
Valley.
Nov 1877 —Participated in Dennis Kearney’s Workingmen’s

Main Street.

Aug 1, 1861—Watchmaker on Commercial Street in Nevada
City.
Sept 4, 1861—Elected county sheriff (REP).
April 18, 1863—Elected captain of new militia company.
Oct 1863—Owned house and lot worth $700 on east side of
Water Street next to George Kidd residence; also house
and lot worth $200 on Hunt's Hill; owned notes, mortgages and scrip worth $5,100.
Jan 21, 1864—Bought a lot at SE corner of Commercial and
Pine for $1,525 from Kelsey Estate after November 1863
fire destroyed the building.
Feb 24, 1864—Seems to have sold the lot at corner of Commercial and Pine to the Masons, who planned to build a
lodge building there.
April 18, 1864—Reelected captain of the Nevada Light
Guard.
Oct 12, 1864—Taxable income for 1863 was $3,000.
Nov 19, 1864—Elected major of 5th Battalion, consisting of
the Nevada Light Guard, the Grass Valley Union Guard,
the Union Guard, Grass Valley Union GUard, Little York
Union Guard, & Eureka Rangers.

Feb 14, 1825—Born in Rappahannock County, Virginia.
Daughter of William Winston Browning and Sarah Smith
Farrow.
—Attended schools in Virginia.
1836—Family moved to Missouri; first to St. Charles County,
and then to Lincoln County, four miles from Troy.
April 1, 1846—Married medical student William J. Knox,
who attended Troy Academy about 1840. The couple settled near his parents at New Hope, before he returned to
medical college at Louisville, Ky., in the fall.
Spring 1847—Husband graduated and began medical practice at New Hope, Missouri.
—Daughter Virginia born in Missouri.
1849—Moved to Troy, Missouri.
April 12, 1850—Left for Calif., traveling overland.
Oct 8, 1850—Arrived at Nevada City, Calif.
Spring 1855— Visited relatives in Missouri with husband and
daughter Virginia.
June 30, 1860—Made a second visit to Missouri with family
and James Whartenby.
Oct 1861—Returned to Nevada City, Nevada County, with
family.
Dec 1862—Moved to San Francisco.
Spring 1863— Moved to Oakland.
Nov 1863—Moved to San Jose, where her husband founded
a bank.
Nov 13, 1867 —Husband died.
1869— Helped organize Woman Suffrage Association in San
Jose.
Aug 1869—Daughter Virginia married Cabel H. Maddux.
Feb 5, 1870—Sold her interest in South Yuba Canal Co.
1874—Sarah asked legislature for a bill to permit women to
hold educational office in Calif.

at New Hope, Lincoln Co., Missouri.
1846-47—Resumed studies at Louisville and graduated in
spring 1847.
1847—Began medical practice at New Hope, Missouri.

1849— Moved to Troy, Missouri, and practiced with Dr. Hi-
