—Came to Calif.
1858—Shoe and bootmaker employed by William R. Coe at
Nevada City, Nevada County.
Nov 25, 1858—He and William Fall opened a boot and shoe
store on Commercial Street, opposite McAllister’s market.
Aug 1860—Taxpayer in Nevada township.
WILLIAM CHARLES STOKES (_—Came to Calif.
Sept 6, 1864—Prop. of U.S. Hotel in Marysville.
Aug 1865—He and wife had opened a boarding house at
Main and School streets in Grass Valley.
Nov 1865—Was about to lease new brick building on corner
of Main and Church streets.
Aug 1866—Closed his boarding houee and auctioned off ts
furniture at a $500 to $600 loss so he could purchase and
operate the saloon of his brother-in-law, Frederick Chinn
on Main Street..Both he and Chinn had been residents of
Marysville before coming to Grass Valley.
May 10, 1867—Prop. of a chop house in building adjoining
the Occidental saloon, Main Street.
Sept 13, 1867—Brother-in-law Frederick Chinn died in New
Orleasn of yellow fever. Chinn had recently moved there
with his wife and child to enter a new field of business.
April—2, 1868 —Had taken over the saloon at Hamilton Hall,
Grass Valley.
Sept 29, 1868—Had repossessed his oyster saloon and chop
house.
Oct 16, 1868—John C. Stokes, 24, a native of London,
England, died at his home. Funeral at Grass Valley and
burial at Marysville.
July 1869—Delegate to Democratic primary caucus.
Dec 1869— Administrator of estate of John C. Stokes.
May 1872—Delegate to County Democratic Convention.
Jan 18, 1876—Prop. of Exchange Hotel at Grass Valley. Advertised room for rent in the Stokes’ Hotel building at
Main and Church streets. Formely used for music store.
Feb 12, 1876—On Grand Jury.
March 14, 1876—Presiden of the Society of O.F.s at Grass Valley.

JOSEPH STOLL (1834-__)
1834—Born in Germany.
1852— Migrated to Ohio and worked in baking business.
1854— Came to Grass Valley, Nevada County, Calif. and was
a baker.
1855—Mined at Grass Valley.
1868 — Kept a store at Grass Valley.
1873—Married Mary Kensorge (b. in St. Louis, Missouri).
1874— Went to Dutch Flat, Placer County.
1875— Moved to Truckee, Nevada County.
1880—Lived in Truckee with wife, son and 2 daughters (one
son had died). Prop. of St. Louis Brewery at Truckee.
Mrs. ELISE PFIEFFER STONE, M.D.( -_ )
—Graduated from Gezin College, Germany; majored in
medicine.
—Practiced medicine and midwifery for 3 years in
Germany.
—Came to U.S. and practiced medicine for 8 years in New
York City (probably in association with Dr. L. A. Wolfe).
—Practiced medicine in Buffalo, New York; gave Professor
White of that city as reference in later years.
—Came to Calif.
March 5, 1858— Advertised in Nevada Journal that she had
established herself at Selby Flat, Nevada County, and offered her services to the ladies of Nevada City and vicinity.
May 21, 1858—Had moved to Nevada City and was living at
3 Boulder Street, next door above John A. Lancaster. Spoke
French, German, and English; practice devoted exclusively
to diseases of her sex.
Oct 8, 1858— Had moved to Broad Street, next door above the
Methodist Church.
Nov 25, 1858—After a local physician allegedly slandered
her professional reputation, Stone challenged anyone “to
prove me inferior in female practice to any physician in
California.”
JEREMY P. “JERRY” STONE (1827-1897) (UNION)
1827—Born in Massachusetts.
1847—Went to Ohio and worked in a store.
Aug 10 or 11, 1849—Arrived in Sacramento, Calif. with
William C. Stiles and other members of the California Industrial Association from Columbus, Ohio.
—Went to Placerville.
1850—Went to Sacramento, then mined on Yuba River and
at Grass Valley.
Aug 1 or 31, 1852—Married Rosena Farrington (b. Dec 2,
1829 in Maine), who had been first school teacher in Grass
Valley, Nevada County.
Dec 1852—Ditchmaster for the Empire Water Co. at Grass
Valley.
June 2, 1854—Son Marion P. “Mal” born.
Aug 17, 1854—Candidate for justice of the peace for Grass
Valley township.
1855— Elected Grass Valley town trustee.
—Son Harold born.
1855—Part owner of Empire Ditch.
1856—Empire Ditch agent, Church St., Grass Valley.
Nov 4, 1856—Election judge at Grass Valley precinct.
June 5, 1858 — Partner of Moses Korn in new market on Mains
Street opposite Mill, former location of Central Market.
July 22, 1863—Delegate to Union county convention.
1864? —Daughter Emma S. born.
March 22, 1864—Delegate to Union county convention.
Oct 12, 1864—Taxable income for 1863 was $1,000.
—Daughter Anna born.
Nov 24, 1872—Daughter born at Grass Valley.
Christmas 1874—Son Mal came home from University of
California for holidays.
June 1877—Wife’s younger brother Edward F. Farrington
had graduated from Amherst Colleg, Mass.
June 2, 1878 —Son Marion “Mal” married Minnie Lewis.
—Daughter Emma married William Henry Butler.
1880—Lived with wife at 52 Church St., Grass Valley. Was
co-owner of the Empire Ditch with Thomas Griffiths.
March 19, 1895— Wife died at Grass Valley.
Jan 2, 1897—Died.
