CLARA THOMPSON ( -_ )
—Came to Calif.
1860—Was a prostitute at Nevada City, Nevada County.
Aug 9, 1860—Shot Thomas Sims of Grass Valley when he
would not leave her house of prostitution on upper Broad
Street.
ca Nov 1860—Arrested on charge of theft but released for
lack of evidence.
March 13, 1861—Rearrested for stealing a diamond pin from
Henry Hyer. Released on $500 bond.
March 19, 1861—Tried for grand larceny and found not
guilty.
Aug 25, 1862—Mrs. Coutard and Mary Lewis were tried at
Nevada City on her complaint that they had come to her
house ona Saturday night about 2:30 AM and threw bottles
and tumblers at her window shutters, breaking them and
some glass parts. Jury failed to agree.
HENRY THOMPSON (1849__)
1849—Born in Santa Barbara, Austria.
1862—Became a sailor and went to New York. Spent 2 years
on packet ship between New York and England.
ca 1864— Migrated to Nevada County, Calif. and mined.
—Worked for Yuba Canal Co.
1877—Married Mary Oliver (b. in Canada).
July 4, 1878—Son Henry Jr. born.
1880—Lived with wife and son at Nevada City.

—Came to Calif. from Dubuque, Iowa.
Oct 23, 1857—Signed benefit letter at Nevada City, Nevada
County.
Jan 26, 1858—Charter member of the Nevada Rifle Co.
Feb 13, 1858—Elected 1st Sgt. of Nevada Rifle Co.
May 26, 1858— Withdrew from partnership with Matthew H.
Funston and William S. McRoberts in a provision store at
corner of Pine and Commercial streets.
Aug 2, 1858—His lawsuit against Max Rosenheim et al was
heard in District Court.
Feb 23, 1859—Was deputy sheriff when he and Deputy Ed.
Burrell searched Hunt's Hill and arrested Victor Boley.
March 14, 1860—Elected 3d Lt. of Nevada Rifle Co.
May 13, 1860—Sec’y of meeting to organize military aid after
Indian fight at Pyramid Lake.
June 18, 1860—Acted as friend of Sheriff Van Hagan for the
proposed duel with Richard B. Moyes.
Aug 8, 1860 —Switched support to Douglas Democrats.
Nov 6, 1860—Elected county public administrator (DEM).
Feb 28, 1861 —Elected sec’y of Nevada Rifle Co.
March 1861—Published Nevada & Grass Valley Directory.
May 1, 1861—Sec’y of meeting to organize a Union Club at
Nevada City.
Sept 14, 1861—Had replaced A. A. Sargent on Nevada City
Fire Board.
Oct 11, 1861—Had left San Francisco bound for Mazatlan,
Mexico, aboard the Panama, allegedly with about $4,000
or $5,000 he had collected as county public administrator.
Was said to have a reputation for gambling, drinking and
stealing.
Nov 12, 1861—Judge David Belden and D. A. Gaylord had
examined his accounts and decided he took $2,000-3,000.
Dec 1861—Was reported at Guaymas, Mexico, enroute to the
Santa Ana silver mines.
March 18, 1863—Dr. Hosmer encountered Thompson at

Guaymas and was told the latter would repay the stolen
money if he ever got enough ahead. Was copartner in a
mine from which no silver had been extracted.
Sept 1865—Died after a lingering illness in Walla Walla,
Washington Territory.

—Came to Calif.
Aug 9, 1859—Bought Nat Brown’s interest in the Nevada
Journal at Nevada City, Nevada County. Became partner
of Edwin G. Waite and T. Warren Lockwood.
Oct 1859— Assessed worth was $6,250.
Aug 25, 1860—Sec’y of Bell & Everett meeting at Nevada City
to elect delegates fo Constitutional Union convention.
Dec 1, 1860—Married Maria V. Herbert at Nevada City.
Oct 18, 1861—After Waite left the Journal to edit the Morning Transcript, Thompson put out four issues of 2 pages
each (on Oct 25, Nov 1, Nov 8, Nov 15) before suspending
publication.
Oct 26, 1861 — Advertised in Nevada Democrat that he would
not be responsible for debts contracted by Waite.
Dec 9, 1861— Waite sued in District Court and won decree
declaring dissolution of Journal partnership and apportioning property.
Jan 28, 1862—Sale of Journal assets postponed from Jan 30
to Feb 8.
Feb 8, 1862—Bought the Journal presses and material at auction for $2,050.
Feb 20, 1862— Announced that he, David B. Frink, E. B. Vanderhoef and Rev. Benjamin Brierly would resume publication of Journal as a tri-weekly. Brierly would edit the
paper.
May 4, 1863 —Defeated for assessor of Nevada township.
July 1863—Brierly died and Frink became the editor.
Nov 4, 1863—Sold his interest in paper to James F. Crossett.
Sept 15, 1865—Son born at Nevada City.
THOMAS T. THOMPSON (_—Came to Calif.
March 24, 1854—Had bought out George W. Dickinson and
became partner of Henry Copp in Nevada Bakery, Nevada
City, Nevada County.
April 24, 1854—Sold his interest in the bakery to William
Jacobs.
April 27, 1854— His horse ran away with him and fell, but he
survived without serious injury.
May 1, 1854—Defeated for city marshal.
1855 — Partner of Jacob Griesel in saddle business at 48 Broad
Street.
Oct 10, 1855—Withdrew from partnership with Griesel.
Dec 1855—Sued S. Danford, Scott, et al.
Jan 1, 1856— Was a miner on Manzanita Hill, Nevada County.
July 25, 1857—Delegate to American county convention.
ca Feb 15,, 1859—His cabin on Bridge Street burned while its
occupants were at work.
July 15, 1859—Had opened a harness and saddlery store at
Nevada City.
Nov 4, 1859—Dissolved partnership with William H. Irwin,
who withdrew from the harness and salle business.
Dec 2, 1859—Was shot accidentally by a French employee.
