Lives of Nevada County Pioneers (version 2019) 16 GEORGE E. TURNER( -_ ) —Came to Calif. May 23, 1856—Employed by Yates & Tallman at Nevada City, Nevada County. Aug 8, 1856—Partner of David S. Tallman in Nevada City hardware store on Commercial St. after John Yates was killed in city fire. May 23, 1858—He and Tallman lost $400 house in Nevada City fire. July 23, 1858—Member of Union Brass Band at Nevada City. Sept 3, 1858—His hydraulic hose won a silver medal at California State Fair. Sept 1, 1859—Married Eliza L. Flower in residence of Mr. Richardson at Nevada City. April 22, 1860 —Daughter born at Nevada City. Aug 21, 1861—Daughter born at Nevada City. March 6, 1862—Had bought Tallman’s interest in hardware store. Oct 1863 —Daughter Lena born. Oct 1863—Owned house and lot worth $1,200 on east side of Nevada Street, next to residence of Capt. Kidd; also stock of hardware on Commercial Street worth $2,500. Feb 16, 1864—Daughter Lena died at Nevada City. June 1, 1864—Moved his tinware and iron into building on Pine Street formerly occupied by Jeffries’ saloon. Feb 9, 1865—On grand jury. March 7, 1865—Installing tin roof on the Nevada Theater. March 12, 1865—Was going to build a scale in front of his Pine Street store. May 11, 1866—Son George Edward died at Nevada City. May 23, 1865—Was going to enlarge his store. ca May 1867—Son Harry born at Nevada City. March 28, 1869—Son Harry died. May 3, 1869—Daughter born at Nevada City. 1871—Prop. of Tallman & Turner stoves, tin and hardware store at 18 & 20 Commercial St., Nevada City. 1877—Elected to Nevada City board of trustees. 1878 —Reelected to board of trustees. Feb 1883—Prop. of hardware store at Nevada City. Mr. H. K. (R.) TURNER ( -_ ) —Came to Calif. Sept 1, 1858—Elected justice of the peace for Little York twp. in Nevada County. JOHN TURNER( ) —Came to Calif. June 9, 1854—Had returned recently from Atlantic states with his lady and family and had fitted up a revolving swing on his ranch at Woods’ Ravine, west of Nevada City, Nevada County. June 22, 1854— Public dance was held at Mr. & Mrs. Turner’s “Mountain Home” hall at Woods’ Ravine. July 4, 1854—Sunday school picnic held at Turner’s Ranch in Woods’ Ravine.
Aug 11, 1854—His claims were making $20 to $30 per day per hand. Aug 10, 1855—His claims reputed to have paid upwards of $7,000 in the previous 3 months. Jan 1, 1856—Was mining at Woods’ Bar. JOSHUA NICHOLAS TURNER (1820-1884) (WHIG, CITIZENS, REP, UNION) 1820—Born in Tennessee. — Married Harriet (b. 1825 in Ohio). Oct or Nov 1847—Son Thomas G. born. 1849— Came overland to Calif. with wife and son Tom. May 1, 1850—Set up a lumber mill on Gold Run and built the first frame hotel in Nevada City from the lumber of a single tree. It was 38 x 48 feet, constructed of rifted pine boards. Hotel was on east side of lower Main St. and rates were $25 per week. Sept 1850—Was foreman of jury that found for the Frenchmen in case of disputed claims at Nevada City. Nov 18, 1850—Signed petition to charter Nevada City. March 12, 1851—He and Bennett Dumars lost $10,000 when the Nevada Hotel burned in city fire; he and Edward Ellis lost $12,000 when their store burned. April 19, 1851 —Was rebuilding his hotel on Main St. May 26, 1851—Election commissioner at first Nevada County election. Sept 3, 1851—Elected to state assembly (WHIG). Nov 18, 1851—On committee to write constitution for the Nevada City vigilance committee. Feb 10, 1852—When Southerners asked legislature to approve plan to bring 2,000 slaves to Calif., he moved to refer the request to a legislative committee, where it then died. April 22, 1852— Reservoir broke and flooded his Main Street hotel, causing damages of $3,000 to $4,000. May 22, 1852—Chairman of Whig county convention. June 1852—Delegate from Nevada County to state Whig convention. Aug 1852—Active in Henry Clay memorial rites at Nevada City. Sept 4, 1852—Delegate to Whig county convention. June 24, 1853—Delegate to Whig county convention. July 1, 1853—Delegate to Whig state convention. Aug 5, 1853—Member Whig county committee. Oct 7, 1853—Ended partnership with Ziba Holt (probably a sawmill). Turner continued the business. Nov 10, 1853— Endorsed character of R. H. Porter. Jan 21, 1854—Elected town trustee in newly incorporated city, to serve until regular election in May (CITIZENS). Jan 27, 1854— Member of city finance committee March 31, 1854—Sold or leased his Nevada Hotel to George W. Dickinson, who called it Dickinson’s Exchange. June 16, 1854—Member Whig county committee. July 7, 1854—Ended partnership with Joseph Doyle. Turner continued the business.
