Lives of Nevada County Pioneers (version 20120) ing on hydraulic nozzle patents owned by Joseph and R. R. Craig. May 1873—Defeated as candidate for Nevada City trustee. 1874—Elected trustee of Nevada City. Jan 1875—Member of Nevada County Board of Supervisors. August 1875—Candidatte for Nevada County Treasurer (I). Oct 1875—Thom & Allan had bought and were removing pumps from the Union Hill mine. Dec 1876—Sole prop. of Allan’s Foundry. 1880—Lived with family at Nevada City. June 1892—Died at Nevada City. Son Albert operated Allan’s Foundry until 1907, when he sold it to William H. Martin, who renamed it the Miners Foundry. Mr.A.D.ALLEN( ) —Came to Calif. June 1858—Member Nevada Rifle Co. at Nevada City, Nevada County. Sept 1, 1859—Listed in book of first locators on the Comstock lead in Virginia City. Sept 3, 1862—Elected to house of representatives of Nevada Territory from Esmeralda Co. but did not take seat. June 17, 1863—Had returned to Nevada City after several years in Nevada Territory, where he had done well. Dr. CORODON ALLEN ( -_ ) —Came to Calif. Oct 22, 1852 —Signed benefit request at Grass Valley, Nevada County. Sept 22, 1853—Physician, druggist and apothecary with an office on Main St. below Mill St., Grass Valley. Sept 30, 1853—Chosen delegate to Pacific Railroad convention at San Francisco. Jan 7, 1854—He and others invited A. A. Sargent to a complimentary supper at Grass Valley. Jan 12, 1854—Moved his drugstore to room above Beatty House. May 2, 1854—Sold drugstore to G. Winchester at first door west of Beatty House. Gen. JAMES ALLEN (1801-1863) (WHIG, AMER) Dec 31, 1801—Born in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. 1826—Married Judith Ann Stidger (born 1809, first white child born in Stark County, Ohio; sister of Oliver P. Stidger) at Canton, Ohio. —Editor of Ohio State Journal and other papers at Canton and Massillon, Ohio. Opposed the Democrats. 1840 — Campaign manager for William Henry Harrison. 1846-48 — Captain of Ohio volunteers in Mexican war . Mustered out as brevet major general for meritorious service and personal bravery. 1850—Came to Calif. and mined at Winslow Bar on the Yuba River with General Rowe and Captain Williams. Dec 1852—Became editor of the Marysville Herald. March 1855—Elected mayor of Marysville, Yuba County. Sept 15, 1855—Elected State Printer (AMER). Oct 31, 1855—He and son, O. P. Allen, bought Sacramento State Tribune, and he became the editor. Nov 5, 1855—Resigned as mayor of Marysville and moved to Sacramento. June 1856—Changed name of Tribune to California American; staff included John Rollin Ridge and S. J. May. Late 1857—Sold his interest in the California American; returned to Marysville to edit the Daily News.
5 Aug 12, 1858—Sold interest in Daily News to John Rollin Ridge and announced his retirement from editing. Oct 29, 1858—Had moved to North San Juan in Nevada County to join his brother-in-law, Oliver P. Stidger. April 14, 1859—Walked from Columbia Hill to Nevada City in a single morning. June 5, 1860—Bought an interest in and took over as editor of the San Juan Hydraulic Press from Benjamin P. Avery, who was going to edit the Marysville Appeal. June 23, 1860—Sold his interest in Hydraulic Press to William Bausman, who took over as editor on June 30. Sept 6, 1860—Became editor and part-owner of the Nevada Daily Transcript at Nevada City. Feb 28, 1861—Sold his interest in the Transcript to his partners, but continued as editor. Oct 11, 1861—Withdrew as editor after Nat P. Brown bought out his remaining partners. Edwin Waite became the new editor, and the politics of the Transcript became openly Republican. Winter 1861-62— Went to Nevada Territory. Oct 18, 1862— Became the editor of the new Washoe Times at Washoe City, owned by George W. Derrickson (or Derickson), a former Nevada City typesetter who had lived near Freeman’s Crossing in October 1858. Jan 23, 1863— Derrickson was murdered by Horace F. Swasey (or Swayze or Swazey), a resident of Galena, near Washoe City in Nevada Territory. Feb 21, 1863—Allen continued to edit the Washoe Times for Derrickson’s brother, B. F., who lived in Nevada County. July 1863—Candidate to be a member of the Nevada State Constitutional Convention. Oct 31, 1863—Died of blood poisoning while attending Territorial Fair at Carson City, Nevada. Buried at North San Juan, where his brother-in-law, O. P. Stidger, was residing still and editing the Hydraulic Press; his son O. P. Allen was living at Marysville. Sept 28, 1871—His widow, Mrs. Judith “Julia” Ann Stidger Allen, died in San Francisco, age 62. JOHN ALLEN( ) —Came to Calif. Probably a slave or ex-slave. 1870—Married former slave Fanny Green. Oct 15, 1870—Daughter born at Grass Valley. Oct 4, 1872—Daughter born at Grass Valley. Jan 24, 1875—Twin sons born at Grass Valley. Feb 21, 1875—Fanny died at Grass Valley, Nevada County, age 35, leaving husband and four children. April 11, 1875—Twin son John died at Grass Valley, leaving him with 2 daughters and one son. Mrs. SARAH M. ALLEN ( —Came to Calif. Feb 18, 1853—Tried and found not guilty of theft (on a technicality) at Nevada City, Nevada County, but Nevada Journal editor thought she was guilty. Jan 1856—Prop. of Sarah Allen saloon, 33 Pine Street. Oct 1860 —Taxpayer in Nevada twp. April 17, 1865—Married Oshea (or Oshed) Eastman of Gold Hill, Nevada, at Nevada City. June 6, 1879—Died at residence of Mrs. Stillwell on Park Avenue, Nevada City. -1879)
