—Came to Calif.
June 1, 1861—Lived at Brown’s Hill near Walloupa, Nevada
County. Drank from a bottle of linament and nearly died.
A doctor at Red Dog gave him an emetic and he recovered.
THEODORE WETZEL Jr. (1855-—)
1855—Born in San Francisco, Calif.
—Engineer at Giant powder works.
1879—Came to North Bloomfield, Nevada County, and was
engineer at the Derbec mine.
JAMES WHARTENBY (c1818-1890) (WHIG, REP,
UNION)
ca 1818—Born in Pennsylvania. Brother of Thomas.
—Was a silversmith at Philadelphia.
1849—Sailed around Cape Horn to Calif. with his brother
Thomas.
Oct 1849—Mined along Deer Creek a few miles below future
site of Nevada City.
1850—Owned water ditches at or near Nevada City.
May 11, 1852—He, Bogy, and Crandall drafted resolutions
at a Nevada City, Nevada County, miners’ meeting calling
for a committee of vigilance to punish thieves.
June 28, 1852—Recorder of Miles Ravine and the Hills and
Thomas Flat and Hill’s mining district.
June 24, 1853—Delegate from Nevada City to Whig county
convention.
April 1855 —Partner of Kidd & Knox in South Yuba Canal Co.
Aug 31, 1855—County paid him $50 for 2 months’ use of a
room for the county judge.
Oct 20, 1855—Won suit against him by Jackson.
Oct 26, 1855—Offered to lease his Nevada Sawmill on Deer
Creek, Y%4 mile above Nevada City. His water company office was on Oregon Hill.
March 14, 1856—The Consolidated Ditch Co. (owned by
him, Kidd, Knox and others) had built an elevated flume as
high as 100 ft. to carry water from Oregon Hill to Lost Hill.
It brought water from Rock Creek and Snow Mountain
ditches at highest elevation and 2 ditches from Deer Creek
at a lower elevation. Total capacity about 1,000 inches.
July 4, 1856—He and Kidd had laid claim to waters of Lake
Bigler (Tahoe) to turn them to the head of South Yuba River.
Dec 1856— Agent of Rock Creek, Deer Creek, and South Yuba
Canal Company. House on African Hill. Brother Thomas
was living with him.
March 27, 1857—South Yuba Canal project nearly finished.
He became the company’s superintendent.
—Purchased brick building on Main Street from Dwight
Crittenden.
May 23, 1858—Lost $500 in damage to brick building in
Nevada City fire.
July 14, 1858—Told Democrat that water in South Yuba was
low and some of the water now running in ditches was
from lakes 6 miles west of Sierra summit.
Aug 9, 1858 —On grand jury.
Sept 1858— Assessed worth was $15,000.
Nov 1858—Had won suit of $3,138.42 against Steve Venard
and others of the Hawk Eye Co. on Cement Hill.
Jan 6, 1859—Brother Thomas was elected to the business
committee of the Library Ass’n.
July 5, 1859—Brother Tom and Charles Marsh left San Francisco for a visit to Atlantic states.

Oct 1859— Assessed worth was $10,000.
Nov 16, 1859—Brother Tom and Charles Marsh had returned
to Nevada City.
May 13, 1860—Subscribed $100 for military aid after Indian
fight at Pyramid Lake
June 29, 1860—Had left to go East on steamer with brother
Tom and Wm. J. Knox and family. Expected to return in 4
or 5 months. Whartenby was going to buy cast iron pipes
at Philadelphia for Marsh waterworks.
July 1860—Brother Tom fell overboard a few hours before
steamer reached New York City.
Aug 1860—Taxpayer in Nevada township.
Nov 16, 1860—Had returned to Nevada City with John
Dawley, Jesse Wall and family, and others.
Jan 11, 1861—Workmen were remodeling his building to
make it the headquarters office of South Yuba Canal Co.
and office of Charles Marsh’s Nevada waterworks.
1861—Sec’y-Treasurer of South Yuba Canal Co.
May 1, 1861—Vice pres. of meeting to organize Union Club
at Nevada City.
May 2, 1861—Donated a large American flag to Nevada Rifle
Co.
June 8, 1861—Member of county Republican committee.
July 6, 1861— Chosen delegate to Republican county conv.
Oct 29, 1862—Was remodeling his Main Street building and
fitting up a suite of rooms upstairs for his bachelor quarters.
June 15, 1863—Delegate to Union county convention.
Nov 8, 1863—His Main Street building was damaged in the
Nevada City fire.
Nov 12, 1863 — He, Birdseye, Charles Kent, William Crawford,
and Mackie & Co. put up money to build the Union Hotel
on Main Street.
Oct 1863—Owned brick house and lot worth $2,700 on east
side of Main Street, next to house of Dr. Harvey Hunt; also
notes, scrip and mortgages worth $37,300.
Jan 5, 1864—South Yuba building had been rebuilt (including his upstairs apartment).
Jan 12, 1864—Offered to sell lot on Commercial Street, plus
walls of the gutted St. Louis Hotel. Also offered to sell
house and lot at junction of Broad Street, nearly opposite
McKay’s residence.
Oct 12, 1864—Taxable income for 1863 was $10,000.
Aug 13, 1866—He and Henry Mackie and family had arrived
in San Francisco after a voyage to the Sandwish Islands on
a sailing vessel.
Jan 1, 1866—Friends from Nevada City and Grass Valley
held a surprise party for him at National Exchange Hotel.
March 21, 1868 —Chosen delegate to Union county conv.
Oct 1, 1869—Trustee of Bank of Nevada County.
Jan 1872—Resigned as sup’t. of South Yuba Canal Co. and
was replaced by Marsh. He stayed on as president.
1876—Was with Charles Marsh at San Francisco when Marsh
died.
1890 —Died, leaving a million dollar estate.
