1860—Moved to San Francisco.
1862—First wife died at San Francisco.
1865— Married the widow of James King of William.
1875—Helped establish the Native Sons of the Golden West.
Aug 26, 1883 —Died in Sonoma County; buried in Sacramento city Cemetery at 9th Street and Broadway. The Sacramento city park at 28th and P streets was named for him,
as was the A. M. Winn Elementary School.
JAMES WINN (1822-1860)
1822—Born in the East Indies.
Nov 3, 1860—Died and was buried at Red Dog, Nevada
County. Member of Odd Fellows lodge.

—Came to Calif.
Sept 1852—Partner of Charles Lansing in store at Omega,
Nevada County.
March 1852—Shot and killed Isaac Moore, who had attacked
him. Winne was exonerated by jury of 12.
Mr. W. H. WISEMAN (1843_)
1843—Born in Maine.
1862—Came to Yuba County, Calif. and mined.
1872—Married Margaret Landrigan (b. in Calif.).
1876— Went to Hunt’s Hill, Nevada County.
1880—Lived at Hunt’s Hill with wife, 2 sons and a daughter.
Part owner of Sailor Flat mines and supt. of Camden hydraulic claims.
G. E. “ED” or “NED” WITHINGTON (1826) (DEM,
UNION)
1826—Born in Centre County, Pennsylvania.
1835— Moved to Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.
—Took up the trade of carriage painting.
1847—Moved to Pittsburg, Pennsylvania.
—Went to Wellsville, Ohio.
1849—Crossed plains to Calif.
Dec 15, 1849—Arrived at Caldwell’s Upper Store on Deer
Creek and mined at future site of Nevada City.
Oct 27, 1850—Lived at Nevada City with butchers I. M. Ekell,
I. W. Waddle, and Jerome Armstrong. Occupation given
as painter.
Winter 1850-51 — Made drawing of Nevada City from which
a lithograph was made and published by Charles Mulford’s
bookstore.
Dec 28, 1853—Had created an ornamental sign at Nevada
City, Nevada County, that presented 3 different messages
when viewed from several angles.
April 1854— Member of coroner's jury at Nevada City.
June 30, 1854— Partner of A. G. Bentley on Broad Street, near
the bridge. Advertised house, sign and ornamental painting, gilding, paperhanging, etc. Paints, oil, varnish, wall
paper, etc. for sale.
Jan 1, 1856—He and Bentley at 7 Broad Street.
July 19, 1856—He and Bentley lost $1,500 in Nevada City
fire.
Aug 8, 1856—He and Bentley were back at their old stand.
Jan 1857 —Member of amateur theatrical company.
July 1857—Was rebuilding his paint shop after it was ruined
by flood caused by Laird dam collapse on Deer Creek in
February.
May 23, 1858—He and Bowley lost $1,500 when two houses
burned in Nevada City fire.

May 2, 1859—Elected Nevada City town trustee (DEM).
Nov 23, 1859— Called for a meeting on Dec 3, 1859 to consider building a Wagon Road from Nevada City to Washoe.
Jan 2, 1860—A ball was held in his “paint hall” at Nevada
City.
1860—Partner of Jeffery & Rolfe in Douglas Mine on Banner
Mountain.
June 1, 1860—Was erecting a dance hall behind his paint
shop that would be 22 feet wide by 60 feet deep.
June 13, 1860—Delegate from Eureka Co. 2 to fire dept.
Aug 1860—Taxpayer in Nevada township.
Aug 1, 1860—Gave a party at his dance hall.
March 14, 1861—3d sergeant in Nevada Rifle Co.
Aug 14, 1861 —His partner (or employee) Mr. Auld refused to
paint a Confederate flag for a Southern sympathizer.
Jan 29, 1862— Married Mrs. Anna E. Sands (b. in Illinois).
July 22, 1862—Signed a petition of support for the Union.
Oct 1863—Owned a house, lot, pictures, paints etc. worth
$1,300 on south side of Broad Street next to Broad Street
bridge; his wife owned 2 houses and lots worth $1,000 on
south side of Water Street next to residence of J. Pattison,
and notes and mortgages worth $1,500.
March 24, 1864—Was decorating National Exchange hotel
parlor.
1871—Wife died.
1880—Listed by census as a sign and carriage painter at
Nevada City; owned a lot and business building.

—Came to Calif.
Sept 4, 1855—Had bought out partner, Mr. Marks, in a cigar
and stationery store at Grass Valley, Nevada County.
Sept 13, 1855—Lost $1,000 in Grass Valley fire.
Feb 18, 1856—Sold his Grass Valley Book and Music Emporium to Kendall and Spencer.
March 4, 1856—Worked at Michelson’s Book and Music
store in Nevada City, where he also was advertising and
subscription agent for the Grass Valley Telegraph.
Oct 3, 1856—Had a cigar store at the American Exchange in
Nevada City.
JONAH WITTER (1833_)
1833—Born in Connecticut.
1856— Went to Ohio and Chicago and then returned to Connecticut. Worked for railroad as an engineer.
1868 — Married Miss H. J. Green (b. in Rhode Island).
1876— Went to Kansas and traveled; was a railroad engineer.
1877—Returned to Connecticut.
1880—Lived with wife, 2 sons and a daughter in Nevada
County, 8 miles from Nevada City and 6 from Grass Valley.
EMMA WIXOM (NEVADA) (1859-1940)
Feb 1859—Born at Alpha, Nevada County, Calif. Daughter of
Dr. William W. Wixom and Marie .
1862—Brought his wife and daughter to live in Nevada City
while he prospected in Austin, Nevada Territory.
ca 1863—She and her mother joined father at Austin.
—Mother died at Austin, Nevada.
1873—Began studies at Mills Seminary, Oakland, Calif.
Aug 8, 1876—Sang at Austin, Nevada.
March 15, 1877—Gave farewell concert at Austin.
April 1877—Sailed for Hamburg on the Pomerania.
Early 1880— Appeared in La Sonnambula at London.
1884— Adopted stage name of Emma Nevada, and returned
