THOMAS ALLEN (1831_)
1831—Born in Canada.
—Worked as a shoemaker and logger.
1851—Went to New York City and was a shoemaker.
1853—Came to Calif. and mined one year in El Dorado Co.
ca 1853—Mined 4 months at headwaters of Feather River.
ca 1855— Mined in Shasta County.
1857—Moved to land 3 miles northwest of Nevada City,
Nevada County.
1858 — Bought interest in mine (which he continued to work
as late as 1880).
1869— Visited Canada and married Kate Cruicshank (born
in Canada).
1880—Lived with wife and three sons 3 miles northwest of
Nevada City.

Feb 16, 1855—Member Nevada County grand jury.
Sept 8, 1856—Appointed county public administrator by
Nevada County board of supervisors.
March 1857—Son had contracted varioloid smallpox.
June 27, 1857—Defeated for delegate to Democratic county
convention.
Nov 23, 1857—His Broad Street house in Nevada City was
robbed.
April 1858— Foreman of Nevada County grand jury.
May 3, 1858— Elected Nevada City assessor.
June 1858— Member Nevada Rifle Co.

THOMAS W. ALLISON ( -_ )
—Came to Calif.
Sept 24, 1852—He and Thomas Beatty advertised for a man
to work on Allison’s Ranch, 2% miles below Grass Valley,
Nevada County.
Oct 21, 1853—Published a card in the Nevada Journal objecting to editorial remarks in the Grass Valley Telegraph about
the unfortunate affair at Allison’s Ranch. Said these had
been printed without his knowledge or consent.

March 4, 1864—Daughter born at Red Dog, Nevada County.
Oct 1864—His taxable income for 1863 was $600.
Aug 15, 1865—Was building a livery stable at Red Dog.
Dec 21, 1865—Daughter Laura born at Red Dog.
April 10, 1866—Had started a livery stable at Red Dog.
June 12, 1866—Had started a stage line between Red Dog
and Colfax.
Aug 15, 1866 His butcher shop, house and livery stables
burned at Red Dog for a loss of $5,000.
June 1867—Butcher at Red Dog. Owned a livery stable “with
good carriages, fast and welltrained horses for either the
saddle of buggy, always on hand.” Ran the Colfax and Red
Dog Daily Stage Line, leaving Red Dog at 6 o’clock AM.
and Colfax at 12 o’clock M.
March 7, 1868—Daughter Laura died at Red Dog.
March 9, 1868— Daughter born at Red Dog.

—Came to Calif.
Nov 24, 1854—He and John B. Lobdell announced the schedule of the Pioneer Stage Line from Nevada City (Nevada
County) to Forest City (Sierra County) via Robinson’s
Crossing, Montezuma Hill, Cherokee, Emery’s Crossing,
and Pimm Valley. Saddle horses available at Forest City to
take passengers to Minnesota [Flat], Chips Diggings, and
Downieville.
March 1, 1855—Ended partnership with Lobdell.
Oct 1860 —Taxpayer in Nevada twp.

Jan 10, 1866—Married at Marysville to Nellie Washburne of
Sutter County.

—Came to Calif.
Sept 13, 1855—Lost $3,500 in Grass Valley, Nevada County,
fire.
April 14, 1858—Assisted in arrest of Michael Collins at
Allison’s Ranch, south of Grass Valley.
Feb 18, 1861—On police force at Grass Valley. Helped arrest
A. Adams for harrassing Constable Stevenson, who was
attempting to arrest a white man who had been fighting
with two Chinese men.
June 1875—On Coroner's Jury at Grass Valley.

—Came to Calif. from Georgia.
Jan 14, 1854—Elected school commissioner at Washington
township, Nevada County.
April 12, 1855—Appointed postmaster at Alpha, Nevada
County.
July 11, 1855—Post office opened at Alpha.
Aug 6, 1856—Shot Joseph Melvin while collecting tolls on
Alpha road.
Oct 8, 1856—Indicted for assaulting Melvin with a deadly
weapon.
Nov 28, 1856 —Partner of G. Lillard in billiard saloon and bar
at the American Exchange Hotel, corner Main and Coyote
sts., Nevada City.
Dec 6, 1856—Bought interest in the Alpha sawmill from
Sheriff Wm. Butterfield for $607.75.
June 23, 1857—Sued Peter and A. D. Skillman.
Aug 1857—Partner of John B. Newman in the clothing firm
of Alston, Newman & Co. at Nevada City. Took trip to
Atlantic states. Had two brothers at Alpha.
Sept 12, 1857—Steamer Central America wrecked off Cape
Hatteras; hundreds drowned and at first Alston was supposed to be among them.
Oct 16, 1857— Alston, Newman & Co. moved to 41 Broad St.
store formerly occupied by Guerin & Co.
Nov 20, 1857— Nevada Journal reported Alston was on list of
those rescued from the Central America.
1858 — Returned to Nevada City to dispose of assets.
Nov 23, 1858— Alston and Newman ended partnership after
auctioning goods.
Dec 6, 1858—Left Nevada City to return to his home in the
States.
1861 or 1862 —Was conscripted into the rebel army.
July 17, 1864—Taken prisoner in front of Petersburg, Virgin-
