ELIZABETH C. CARRIER ( -_ )
—Married Andrew Carrier.
—Came to Calif.
Dec 15, 1852—Filed for divorce at Nevada City, Nevada
County.
Jan 14, 1852—Re-opened The Pavillion House, a Broad St.
boarding house.
Feb 16, 1852—Won her divorce.
March 6, 1852— Married D. M. Head at Nevada City.
April 12, 1852—D. M. Head wrote and confessed to her that
she was married already and could not see her again;
begged her pardon.
April 21, 1852—Elizabeth Head sent his letter and one of her
own to the Nevada Journal, which published both on April
25, 1852, as a warning to others.
Mr. F. B. CARRINGTON (1854)
1854—Born in Delaware County, New York.
—Engaged in farming.
1876— Came to Nevada County, Calif. where he farmed and
was in the lumber business.
1880—Lived at Boca and worked for Pacific Shingle Co. at
Pacific station.
CHARLES F. CARROLL (c1827-1863)
ca 1827—Born.
—Came to Calif.
—Married Isabella F .
Aug 9, 1860—His meat market and barn on Main St. burned
at Grass Valley, Nevada County. Loss $1,500.
May 7, 1861—Daughter Anna born at Grass Valley.
Oct 6 or 10, 1861—Daughter Anna died at Grass Valley.
March 30, 1863—Died at Grass Valley.
Nov 4, 1866—Widow married Cal. R. Clarke at Grass Valley.
GEORGE CARSON (1813_)
1813—Born in Virginia.
1826—Moved to Kentucky.
1830—Went to Missouri and worked in the saddle and harness business.
1840—Married Miss E. W. McKinney (b. in Alabama).
1864—Crossed the plains to Grass Valley, Nevada County,
Calif.
Jan 1, 1867—Had a saddle and harness shop in Grass Valley,
opposite the gas works. He lived with his family on Wood
Street.
1880—His shop was at 31 Mill Street, Grass Valley. Lived on
Townsend Street with wife, two sons and four daughters.
DENNIS DRUMMOND CARTER (1814_)
Jan 1, 1814—Born in Drummondtown, Acomac County,
Virginia, to parents of Indian and African descent.
1825—Moved to Philadelphia, Penn. Became a musician.
1837—Played in Frank Johnson’s band when it toured Europe and England.
—Returned to Philadelphia and a musical career.
1851—Came to Calif.
1852— Came to Nevada City, Nevada County.
Dec 20, 1855—Delegate from Nevada County to Colored
People’s convention at Sacramento.
June 1856—Indicted for assault with a deadly weapon.
Nov 16, 1860—His frame building on Lost Hill was blown
down and destroyed in windstorm.
Jan 1861—Owed Nevada City property tax of $3 for house
and lot on Lost Hill, and $2 for cabin and lot on Lost Hill.
Jan 14, 1863—Vice pres. of Emancipation celebration at
Nevada City.
Oct 1863 —Owned house and lot worth $400 on south side of
Scotch Hill back of McArthur residence.
June 3, 1864—Professor Carter’s band played at the May Day
picnic for school children.
Oct 6, 1864—Played bass viol in a trio with John F. Bussenius
(piano) and Professor Schmidtschneider (violin) at a benefit ball for the latter at the Union Hotel.
Jan 2, 1865—Presided over Emmancipation celebration at
Grass Valley.
Aug 29, 1866— Married at Nevada City to Mrs. M. Jennie Correll (b. 1830 in Louisiana), who wrote under the pen name
“Semper Fidelis” for the San Francisco Elevator, a newspaper for black readers founded in April 1865 by P. A. Bell.
Dec 22, 1866—Friends gave him a benefit concert.
Jan 1, 1868—Gave oration at Emancipation anniversary in
Nevada City.
1870—Musician living with wife at Nevada City; $1,000 real
estate, $400 personal property.
Feb 1875—He, Prof. Muller, Cooley and Beckett provide music for Grass Valley Firemen’s Ball at Hamilton Hall.
1880—Leader of the Nevada City military band.
Aug 1881—Wife Jennie died at the age of 51. Her obituary
stated “Sudden Death” of “Dropsy of the Heart.” She was
buried in Pine Grove Cemetery in Nevada City.
Jan 1883—Messrs. Elser, Goyne, Green and Carter provide
music for a benefit entertainment at Nevada Theater in
Nevada City.
Feb 1884—Music for Leap Year party by Messrs. Davis, Beckett, Goyne, Granville, Cooley, Bond and Carter was highly
complimented for its harmony.
Dec 1885—There will be Christinas services at St. Patrick’s
Church on Friday, Musicians—Miss Ida Early, organist;
Phil. Goyne and Ross Cooley, violinists; James Cooley and
John Cooley, cornets; John Glasson, flute; Simon Jenkins,
violincello, D. D. Carter, double bass.
April 1886—Seected as juror in trial of Aaron Mersea.
1893 —Still living in Nevada City.
July 6, 1894,—Died at the Nevada County Hospital, aged 79
years, a native of Virginia.
