Lives of Nevada County Pioneers (version 20120) WILLIAM F. ANDERSON (1827-1883) (DEM) 1827—Born in Washington, D.C. —Came to Calif. Dec 1854—Robbed in Sacramento by William H. Best and Frank Brayer. Best was convicted and sentenced to 7 years in state prison. Sept 10, 1855—John A. Covell attempted to poison him at Nevada City, Nevada County, using strychnine, presumably to prevent him from testifying at trial. Oct 6, 1855—Covell found guilty of attempted murder and sentenced to 15 years in prison. Jan 1856—Attorney at Nevada City, boarding at the United States Hotel, corner Broad and Pine. Jan 2, 1856—Became editor of the Nevada Democrat. Law partner of Charles F. Smith, with office on second floor of the Mulford building on Main St. July 19, 1856—Badly injured in Nevada City fire, along with brother-in-law George A. Young. Aug 2, 1856—Unable to edit first post-fire issue of Democrat because of his burns. Nov 4, 1856—Elected Nevada County district attorney at a salary of $2,500 a year (DEM). Nov 17, 1856—Trustee of Nevada school district. Jan 2, 1857—Retired as editor of Democrat and was replaced by Tallman Rolfe. May 28, 1857—Began term as district attorney. Nov 1857—Thanked private teacher T. Warren Lockwood for donating $374.50 proceeds from his high school exhibitions to the public school fund. Jan 26, 1858— Charter member of Nevada Rifle Co. April 10, 1858—Won second prize at Nevada Rifle Co. target shoot. Aug 8, 1858—Thrown from horse and injured near Weiss brewery at Nevada City. June 4, 1859— Chosen delegate to Democratic county conv. Sept 7, 1859— Unsuccessful candidate for state senate; one of only three Administration Democrats to lose. Oct 1859—Anderson’s term of office expired. Nov 23, 1859—Joined call for a meeting to consider building a wagon road from Nevada City to Washoe. Nov 25, 1859—One of the managers for the Grand Ball to benefit the Catholic Church in Grass Valley Dec 9, 1859—Moved to Washoe mining district. May 1860—Practicing law in Carson City. March 2, 1860— Visited Nevada City. May 13, 1860—Fear expressed that he had been killed in fight with Indians at Pyramid Lake; report was untrue. Nov 30, 1860—Was practicing law at Virginia City. Visited Nevada City for a few days. April 1861 —Went to Sacramento to lobby legislature to cede land east of Sierra summit to Nevada Territory. Aug 31, 1861—Unsuccessful candidate to represent Nevada Territory in Congress (DEM). Oct 27, 1861—Had a buggy accident on Henness Pass road while returning from Virginia City with George Roberts. April 20, 1864—Traveled from Nevada City to Virginia City with J. Figuiere and C. Wilson Hill. Sept 7, 1864—Elected to Nevada Territorial Assembly from Storey County, but didn’t serve because Nevada became a state (DEM).
May 1875—District Attorney at Virginia City, Nevada. Was in Nevada City on a business trip 1875—Moved to San Francisco. Dec 3, 1877— Assemblyman from San Francisco (DEM). July 7, 1883—Died in Idaho. Mrs. CONCHI ANDRADE( -_ ) 1857 or earlier—Came to Nevada City, Calif. Oct 2, 1907—Mrs. Andrade attended reception for pioneer women at Nevada City, Nevada County. JOEL ANDREW (1835_) 1835—Born in England. 1864—Married Mary Andrew and they came to El Dorado County, Calif. and mined. 1865—Was a miner at Grass Valley, Nevada County. 1866—Son Richard born at Grass Valley. 1872—Daughter Jane born at Grass Valley. ca Dec 1874— Daughter Mary born at Grass Valley Aug 8, 1875—Dau. Mary died at Grass Valley. 1880—Owned an interest in New Rocky Bar mine and lived on Auburn Street in Grass Valley. 1900 —Living with wife at Grass Valley. SAMUEL ANDREWS (1834__) 1834—Born in Londondery, Ireland. 1852—Migrated to Tuolumne County, Calif. and mined. July 1874— Went to Eastern part of U.S. Feb 1876—Married Susan E. Lamon (b. Carbon Co., Penn). May 1877—Moved with wife to Blue Tent, Nevada County, Calif., and engaged in mining. —Son born. 1880—Lived at Blue Tent with wife and son. THOMAS J. ANDREWS (— -__ +) (DEM) —Came to Calif. Jan 8, 1852 —Chosen delegate to Democratic state convention from Nevada County. June 4, 1853—Chosen delegate to Democratic state conv. June 28, 1853— Reported Rough and Ready, Nevada County, fire losses to the Nevada Journal. Sept 15, 1859—Traveled to Washoe with George Hearst, George Roberts and John K. Sale. WHIPPLE ANDREWS ( -_ ) —Came to Calif. Sept 4, 1861—Elected justice of peace for Bloomfield twp., Nevada County. June 19, 1862—Had resigned his office. Dr. WILLIAM D.APLIN( -_ ) —Came to Calif. June 1867—Miner at Little York, Nevada County. 1880—Owned 100 acres of mining ground. ELIZABETH “LIZZIE” APPLEGATE (_-) —Came to Calif. Jan 20, 1854—Four men fined $85 for breaking windows in her house of ill-fame on Pine St., Nevada City, Nevada County. Jan 5, 1856—Fined $500 by court of sessions for operating house of ill-fame. Her house and lot at Pine and Commercial streets were to be sold at Feb. 16 auction.
