Lives of Nevada County Pioneers (version 20120) JACOB P. ARBOGAST (1826-__ ) April 1826—Born in Pennsylvania. ca 1852—Married Eliza (born May 1837 in Pennsylvania). Jan 1854—Son Jonathan born in Pennsylvania. 1857 or earlier—Came to Nevada City with wife and son. June 1870—Daughter Elsie E. born in Calif. Jan 1874—Son Aaron born in Calif. Jan 1875—2' year old son scalded when he fell ino pail of boiling water. July 1875—Son Cary S. born in Calif. 1900—Farmer living at Selby Flat with wife, 3 sons and one daughter. Oct 2, 1907—Wife Eliza attended pioneer women reception at Nevada City, Nevada County. JOHN ARBOGAST( ) —Came to Calif. Sept 15, 1858— Had $7,300 taxable property in Nevada Co. Oct 1860—Taxpayer in Nevada township. Feb 1873—Selected for Nevada County jury list. April 1873—His hydraulic claims near Nevada City caved on Charles Bovee and broke his leg. JOHN R. ARCHIBALD (_ -__) (REP) —Came to Calif. Nov 4, 1856—Defeated for Nevada County Surveyor. Dec 19, 1856—Member of Manzanita Lodge 102, F&AM at North San Juan. June 14, 1858— Member of grand jury. April 28, 1857—On jury that tried Henry Hays for murder. MARTIN ARFMAN (1834_ ) 1834—Born in Hanover, Germany. 1852—Migrated to Ohio and engaged in cabinet making and store keeping. 1857 —Came to Alameda, Calif. and farmed. 1859 — Went to El Dorado County and mined. 1861—Came to Nevada County and mined (mostly). Nov 27, 1868—Married Mrs. N. Jennie Rambo (b. in Iowa and crossed plains to Calif. in 1864) at Mt. Vernon House. 1880 — Lived at Relief Hill with wife, son and two daughters. Received mail at N. Bloomfield postoffice. ALFRED J. ARGALL (1869_) 1869—Born in England. 1877—Came to Grass Valley, Calif. and attended local schools. —Worked for S. Yeo and Elam Biggs. —Took charge of shoe business for Yeo and Moore. — Went to San Francisco and worked for Cahn, Nickelsburg & Co., shoe manufacturers. —Went back to Grass Valley to become manager of clothing, furnishings and shoes for Clinch & Co. 1895—Managed the former Van’s Opera House (or Hall), now owned by his employer, Charles Clinch. The theater became known as Argall’s Opera House while he managed it. Mr. M. W. ARGALL (1847-__) 1847—Born in England.’ 1864— Came to Grass Valley, Calif. and worked as a blacksmith.
1867—Left Grass Valley. 1873—Returned to Grass Valley, where he resumed his trade as blacksmith. Worked at the North Star and New York Hill mines for 11 years. 1886—Opened a repair shop on lower Mill St. next to his home. 1895— President of Grass Valley School Board for two terms. GEORGE H. ARMSTRONG (1827-1859) —Came to Calif. from Almond, N.Y. Dec 24, 1856—Sued Artemas Rogers in Nevada County. Nov 3, 1856—Took part in Gold Flat, Nevada County, shootout that ended with deaths of Sheriff Wright and deputy Johnson (the latter died at Armstrong’s house). April 6, 1858—On grand jury at Nevada City. June 17, 1859—Died at Gold Flat from diseased heart and stomach. Buried at Pioneer Cemetery. KELSEY ARMSTRONG (_—Came to Calif. July 3, 1858—Defeated for delegate to the Nevada County Democratic convention. —Went to East Coast. Dec 7, 1859—Had returned to Calif. with W. R. Coe. ) (DEM) WILLIAM REILLY ARMSTRONG ( -__) (DEM) —Came to Calif. Sept 5, 1855—Elected constable for Rough and Ready township, Nevada County. Oct 26, 1855— William Cooper's partner at Union Livery Stable behind Union Hotel, Broad St., Nevada City. July 19, 1856—Burned out in Nevada City fire. Aug 8, 1856—Back in business at same location. Sept 3, 1856—Delegate to Democratic county convention from Rough and Ready. Sept 5, 1856—Had arrested B. Nathan for assault at Rough and Ready. Feb 27, 1857—Ended partnership with Cooper. New partner was McPutney. 1858 — Elected to state assembly (Buchanan DEM). Aug 24, 1862—Married Sarah Levanch Howard at Dr. McCormick’s Grass Valley home. July 6, 1865—Daughter Corah Levanch born at Virginia City, Nevada. HENRY ARNOLD ( -_ ) (DEM, UNION) —Brother of Samuel Arnold. —Came to Calif. —Married : June 1858— Member Nevada Rifle Co. in Nevada County. Aug 9, 1858 —On grand jury. Jan 24, 1859—His and Samuel Arnold’s house (formerly Bell’s Ranch) on Orleans Flat road destroyed by fire. May 5, 1859—Held a ball at his newly rebuilt hotel and store at Arnold’s Ranch. June 29, 1859—Emma Arnold married Henry Kinney at Arnold’s Ranch. May 9, 1860—Prop. of hotel and ranch at Lake City. July 1860—Son Charles Henry born (prob. at Lake City).
