Lives of Nevada County Pioneers 25 OCTAVIUS KING CLOUDMAN (1841-1916) April 16, 1841—Born in Portland Maine, son of Charles and Rachael Cloudman. 1862—Enlisted in the Union Army. 1863 — Discharged because of illness. 1865—Came to Calif. and mined at Michigan Bluff. 1866—Mined at Gold Run, Placer County. 1870—Moved to You Bet, Nevada County, and was partner of C. J. Fox in the hardware and grocery business. Jan 4, 1877—Stayed overnight at National Exchange Hotel in Nevada City with George S. Powers, supt. of the Birdseye Creek Hydraulic Gold Mining Co. of You Bet. May 10, 1877—Had supper at National Exchange Hotel in Nevada City with George S. Powers and Albert B. Dibble. May 28, 1877—Married Jennie Caldwell in Nevada City. (Ssee her separate listing.) April 29, 1880—Son Harold Caldwell born in You Bet. 1880—Lived at You Bet with wife and son Haold. Owned town property. Feb 1883—Naffziger & Cloudman had a pork packing business on Main Street, Nevada City, nearly opposite the Union Hotel. Feb 21, 1883 —Stayed at the Union Hotel in Nevada City with Jerry S. Goodwin. 1883— Had a house and lot on east side of road to Little York; bounded on the west by the Grass Valley road and the Fox and Cloudman store, and on north by the Heinson saloon. Jan 20, 1884— Daughter Elizabeth Lee born in You Bet. —Active member of F&AM; belonged to the Blue Lodge for 44 years, was past master of Clay Lodge #101 of Dutch Flat, was a Royal Arch Mason of Colfax, and a Knight Templar of Nevada City. —Wife Jennie was member of the Eastern Star and Knights Templar Ladies Auxiliary. 1901— Moved to Berkeley and worked in the U.S. Customs House at San Francisco. Aug 14, 1916—Died in San Francisco. Feb 19, 1934—Wife Jennie died in Berkeley. (View of his place facing page 139 of 1880 TW History) SAMUEL CLUTTER ( -_ ) —Came to Nevada County, Calif. May 2, 1865—Carriage and wagon maker at Nevada City on Coyote Street, opposite the Nevada Gas works. 1867—Resident of Nevada City. Sept 16, 1867—Married Miss Mary Giles (of Nevada City) at Grass Valley. (She had come to Nevada City in 1857 or earlier.) Oct 30, 1868 — Daughter born at Nevada City. Oct 2, 1907—Wife attended pioneer women reception at Nevada City. Mr. B.M.COATES ( -_ ) —Came to Calif. Sept 1849— Arrived at Deer Creek diggings. April 11, 1852—Road supervisor for Nevada township, Nevada County. Sept 22, 1852—He and T. J. McCormick withdrew from partnership with Isaac Williamson and I. N. Dawley. Dec 14, 1852—Left Nevada City to go to Wisconsin on business. Expected to return in about September 1853. Oct 2, 1853— Wedding of John Kelly and Mary Minkler took place at his Nevada City home.
Mr. J.C. COATES ( ) —Came to Calif. Feb 22, 1856—Had a sawmill at Columbia Hill, Nevada County. Mr. W. R. COBURN ( -_ ) (REP) —Came to Calif. May 7, 1855—Elected assessor for Nevada City, Nevada County. Dec 1855—Partner of Cook in a painting firm at 34 Commercial St., upstairs. May 1, 1856—Delegate at Republican state convention. July 19, 1856—He and Cook lost $2.000 in Nevada City fire. JESSECODY ( ) —Came to Nevada County, Calif. May 1, 1856—He and Bailey Gatzert bought Jacob S. Landeker’s grocery at 29 Commercial St., Nevada City. July 19, 1856—Lost $500 when house burned in city fire. Aug 8, 1856—He and Gatzert reopened grocery business after fire. Sept 5, 1856—Sold his interest in store back to Landeker. Dec 19, 1856—Cody and George May bought the Shenandoah Billiard Saloon in the basement of the Kidd & Knox building. Mr.A.COE ( -_ ) —Came to Calif. May 26, 1854—Prop. of grocery and provisions store in former Green & Jacobs location at foot of Broad and Main, Nevada City, Nevada County. 1860—Taxpayer in Nevada township. 1863— Owned house and lot and tract of land worth $1,000 near Nevada City, on south side of Red Dog Rd. next to Mrs. Kistle’s property. WILLIAM R.COE ( -_ ) —Came to Calif. Dec 1855—Owned a boot and shoe store at 68 Broad St., Nevada City, Nevada County. April 11, 1856—He and Simon Mayers bought P. J. Espenscheid’s shoe store in brick building on northwest corner of Main and Commercial streets. July 19, 1856—Building survived city fire with little damage. Aug 8, 1856—Business reopened at old stand. April 3, 1857—Became Espenscheid’s partner when Mayers sold his interest. Oct 23, 1857 —Signed a benefit letter at Nevada City. Dec 1857—Espenscheid committed suicide; Coe became an executor for his estate. May 23, 1858—Building again survived city fire. July 23, 1858—Member of Union Brass Band at Nevada City. Aug 6, 1858 — Was erecting a new brick building to serve as a shop for his store. Aug 27, 1858—While his old store was being remodeled, raised to street level, and elevated between floors, customers could shop in the new brick building. Sept 1858— Assessed worth was $7,500. Nov 12, 1858—Simon Mayers had moved his boot and shoe trade into Coes stand at Main and Commercial. April 1859—Left Calif. for visit in eastern U.S. Oct 1859— Assessed worth $10,000.
