The ship ‘south Carolina’ Ss manifest of David Binkelmann and Sophie Meder on Sept. 17, 1852, arrived as
legal immigrants in New York City, NY, from Le Havre, France.
We are incredibly fortunate to have a historical narrative written by Winifred W. “Daught” (nickname
came from “daughter”) Tyrrell, the daughter of Winifred A. Wilhelm Tyrrell. Daught was the
granddaughter of David and Sophia Mader Binklemann. The historical narrative written in 1968 comes
from her conversations and memories with all her parents and relatives, including her grandmother,
Sophia Mader Binklemann. These six pages of concise historical narrative about her grandparents,
parents, siblings, and her life tell us so much that we would never be able to retrieve from any other
