Nevada County Deep Drainage & Development Co.:
“The Nevada County Deep Drainage & Development Co. has been reorganized, with W.
H. Martin, F. J. Sloat, George W. Downey, C. E. Clinch, F. M. Miller, . . W. Hays, D. E.
Morgan, and A. W. Hoge as directors. The object of the organization is to drive a
drainage adit from near Jones bar, through the Nevada City district. It is extimated that
the principal vein system of the district can be tapped at a distance of 15,000 ft. at the
Champion mine to 1800 ft. at the Pittsburg. The plan contemplates the extension of the
adit beyond this vein system to the Town Talk ridge, thence farther on into the Grass
Valley district. The finding of new orebodies not exposed at the surface, it is believed,
will be one of the advantages attained by driving this adit. The estimated cost of driving
to the nearest producing mine is $175,000, and the income to be derived from Drainage
service, ore haulage, and water-supply, it is estimated, will exceed this sum per year.
The directors have chosen as president, Fred M. Miller; vice-president, G. W. Downey;
secretary, G. M. Noyes; treasurer, D. E. Morgan. Those who stand as sponsors for the
project are interested in mining in Nevada City District.” Mining & Scientific Press, pg.

“The Nevada County Deep Drainage Tunnel Co. has been formed to drive a drainage
adit from the South Yuba river, near Jones bar, for three miles toward the Champion
mine, where it will drain the district to a depth of 1050 ft.” Mining & Scientific Press, pg.

“The project of driving a deep adit from a site on Rush creek, near Jones bar, in Nevada
City-Grass Valley district is being considered. A plan for accomplishing this was outlined
by Geo. W. Downey a few years ago. A bore starting at the place proposed, would give a
depth at several mines of about 1400 ft. and if it were driven as far as the Champion mine
it would have a length of 11,000 ft. The possible discovery of new veins of ore is one of
the strong incentives to carrying out the project.” Mining & Scientific Press, pg. 280, 218-1911
“Preliminary preparations for the starting of work on the big tunnel of the Nevada County
Deep Drainage & Development Co. are under way. The road from the main thoroughfare
to the tunnel site has been graded. George W. Downey will direct the work.” Mining &
