V4. The Mining aul Seientifie Lress, “ OHIPPINGS,” Kyowzepce and timber should not be much used till they are seasoned. Never quarrel with a lady. If you are troubled with her, retreat. Turatres and balls are often the mere embroidery on the tattered clothes of civilized life. Tre present Mayor of Manchester, England, was formerly a vendor of newspapers. Nncouraging to newsboys. : Mr. Spurocon, the great English sensation preacher, had to remonstrate witb the young ladies of his chapel for fainting away so often. Tue “false hair merchants” of London import annually, at present, no less than five tons of maiden locks. So says an exchange. New Gren Cotors.—At the recent annual meeting of the Academy of Science, in France, a prize of $500 was awarded to M. Guignet for the prepara-' tion of a non-injurious green for printing on tissues, and another of $300 ($1,500 fraucs,) to M. Bouffe, for having discovered a substitute for a non-arsenical green in the manufacture of’ artificial green. Warer-Proor Boots anp Sxors.—Take three ounces of spermacetti and melt in an earthern vessel over a slow fire; add thereto six drachms of India rubber, cut in slices, and these will preseutly dissolve; then add of tallow cight ounces; bog’s lard, two ounces; amber varnish, founces; mix, and it will be fit for use immediately. The boots or other matcrials to be treated are to recéive two or three coats with a common blacking brusb, and a fine polish is the result. Wonpverrun.—An excbange says it is horrible to think what discoveries science is constantly making. It is not sufficient that some eminent astronomer at Cambridge should discover a comet per month, but Professor Tyndall must state that the weight of this earth is such, and the velocity with which it moves so great, that if it should suddenly stop, the heat it would create would be sufficient to reduce it to a thin vapor. Prof. Tyndall adds that, “if after the stoppage of its motion the earth should fall into the sun, as it assuredly would, the amount of heat generated by the blow would be equal to that developed by the combustion of 5,600 worlds of solid carbon.” Tue Desert Minine District.—This district appears to be coustantly growing in favor and intcrest. The Virginia Union of February 27th says :—T'be minerals iu the Desert District consist mostly of gold, and although the ledges are, as a general thing, narrow on top—being only from one to two feet wide, they expand as descended upon, holding their richness at the same time. Ata depth of filty or sixty feet, the lowest depth yet reached on any of them, several have a width of five feet, and are extremely rich in gold—mucb of it free, and some of the specimens surpassing anytbing ever found in Gold Hill. The Mark Anthony aud Cleopatra ledges, composing the ground of the Golconda Company, amongst the best in the District, are opened by means of a shaft fifty feet deep, and being large aud full of metal, are considered very valuable. Iu the Sebastopol and New Virginia Districts the metal is almost exclusively silver, the rock bearing a close resemblance to that found about Austin, and so far as assays go, it would seem to be nearly equal to the Recse River ores. The Smith & Warfield ledge ip Sebastopol is said to be one of great promise. One of the chief drawbacks to the progress of this mining district— the lack of a good road—vwill soon be obviated. be problem for a supply of water, however, appears to be more difficult of solution. Tbe ditcl plans appear to have all resulted in failures, being impractienable. Drinking water is now being packed to the mines from the slougb of the Humboldt and sold at two bits a gallon. Professor Whitney’s Lecture.—Extra copies of the Mininc AND Sctentiric Press of February 6th, 1864, contalning tho Tecture of Prof. J. D. Whitney, (State Geologist.) on “ Mining anp Ins RELATIONS TO C1v1LIZATION AND PRoGress,"’ can be obtained by calling at this office. y Pacific Mail Steamship Company. SAMUEL TIILL, General Agent. lI Montgomery street, between Bush and Sutter, San Francisco, Calitonusa, je3m WILEKELER’S Amalgamating and Separating Pans T IS ACKNOWLEDCED BY ALL WHO HAVE EXAMINED THE rincipics aud witnessed the operation of these Pans, that they are decidedly superior tor triturating and amalgamating purposes to any other in use. The mast important principle connected with the operation of these Pans is the pe raraton ot the triturating process from that of extracting the amalgam trom the sand. The chief cause of loss of the precious metal arises trom the passing off of the same In combination with the quicksilver, drring the process of trituration, and hieleanlng up. By the introduetion ot the Separating Han to totlow the triturating, this loss is entirely avoided. ln working theso Machines there is noe uppreciable loss of quicksilver, and hence nonce of the precious metals, Where t P. ave been iutrodneed and operated by the side of others o1 nds from the same vat, the Wheeler Pais lave uni. tormly galned a large pereentage of metals, over its competitors, as well asa stilt larger pereentage in the amount of work performed. *,* these Pans muy be seen in daily operation at the Miners, Foundry, an First street, San Franciseo, where ali interested are Invited tu call and examine for themselves. ZENAS WHEELER. nolbtf To Quartz Miners. LL PERSONS INTERESTED IN MINING MACHINERY ARE invited to call at Donaline’s Foundry and examine my Improved Amalgamator. 1t ls unquestionably superior to anything pow knowl tor amalgamating Silver and Cola. It works 1000 pounds at a ume, and will nmalgamate over three tonga day. By the motion of the revolving mniier, the pulp isdrawn through its centre and passes under it, between the griuding surfaces, to the circumercnee; from wheuce it passes again over the mulicr to {lic centre, through tho holes and between tho grinding surfice to the clreumference as beforn. Thus a coustant cireulation of the pulp is kept np, bringing the particles of are again and again nnder the muller, and reducing the whole mass to an impalpable powder. No quicksiiver lies between tho surfaces to bo ground, but at the elrenniterence and centre of the pan whero the metal must pass through it as the pulp elrenlates. A putent was granted for this Amalgamator in Deecmber last, and al] persons are in wnrned against pnrehasing machines made at tho Miners’ Ponndry, called “Wheeler's Amalgamutor,” as they are an intriugement en my patent, aud a i now pending in the U, 8. Circuit Conrt aguinst the parties infri ng. My Amalgamators can be seen rinning nt Donaline’s Foundry, where all can judye of their operation and tlie very superior style in which they are being EOE TTLEDY THOMAS VARNEY. sepe
