Copren As AN lxvestmeNT.—A Campbell, Esq.,
one of the editors of the Lake Superior News aud
Journal, writing to his paper from the city of New
York, and speaking of copper miniag says :—
“ We venture the assertion that there is ao stock
io the world either so safe or remunerative as eopper
stocks. Bank, Railroad, State and National stocks,
except the inflation of speculation, have a standard
value based upon the dividends they will surely pay,
or from six to ten percentnmn yearly, but in copper,
if the grouod iseertainly known to be rieh and nbundant, averaging from two and ahalf to five per ceut.
of stamp work, the capitalist who buys from one to
five thousand shares of its stock at $10 or $15 or
$20 per share, and then invests from $3 to $5 more
per share in the form of assessments to open and
work the mine ts sure to havea stoek worth from
$50 to $100, a result that warrants the iavestinent.
The etocks of the mines upon the south range of
the Ontonagon district are very firmly held and constantly advaneing, and we shall be much disappointed if most of the mines upon it do aot, in an incredibly short tiine, rival the very best oow on the lake,
they certainly will if the stoek holders shell out their
money, upon their ground, and put up sufficieut mills
and machinery.”
The above is written after an experieace of some
fifteea years of eopper 1oining at Lake Superior. 1t
will be noticed tliat two nnd a half to five per eent.
yield of “ stamp work,” or what we in California
would eall second elass ore, from whieh the shippiug
ore bas been selected, is there considered a remunerative elass of ore; nnd that a mine producing
such ao ore must soou, by proper development, rcach
a high figure in value. ”
As an evidenee of the value placed upon Lnke
Superior eopper stocks we may note a late traasac-.
tion which oeearred at the Rooins of the Fourth
Street Bourd of ‘Trade, in the city of Pittsburg. The
property and effects of the Adventure Mining Company, located in the county of Ontonagon, Miehigan
(Lake Superior) was sold at the above mentioned
Board, on the 19th of January last. for $110,000,
ooe fourth cash.
Work on tue Aquira — Comanene — The work
of raising the materials of the Comanebe is progressing finely. The main portion of the engines and
nearly all the finished iron work has been raised, aud
thoroughly eleansed, being to all appearances iu as
good order as before its submergence. The prineipal part of the heavy castings, with the exception of
the guns have also been raised. Upwards of oaehalf of the cotire, cargo has aow been landed.
Tue Burssen Ran came pouriog dowo upoo us

thankfully and joyfully reeeived in this eity. We are
bopeful that the mountains and valleys have received
an abundance. i
amavor, Rergr Riven.—This town, it is said, is
growing rapidly, and would be considered a wonder
if it were three yeurs instead of threo months old.
All visitors to this distriet go first to examine the
fainons Amador ledge. Active operations are in
progress npon several extensions. Just beyond the
town of Amador is n place called Forty-nino Hill,
whieli is beginning to attract some attention. Thero
aro several clnims there which assay well. The As.
pinwall and Bigelow companies are especially spoken
of as promising and eligibly situated for working.
A tunnel, started at the foot of the hill, wonld
strike them £00 or 500 feet from the onterop; and if
the ledge continues in richness as they go down,
they must sooa become very valuable. They nre
both very licavy as well as rich at tbe surface ; the
ore, thongh silver, much resembling in brillianey of
color “ peacock ore” of copper. A working test in
San Francisco has fully ‘proved the richness of the
ore. The proprietors are working on quietly, making
ao noise, hut satisfied they have a “ good thing,” sure.
Wasroz Coa,.—The Territorial Lnterprise of

of the El Dorado coal, and to our surprise, find it as
good eoal as we wish to use, both for heating our
boilers and kiln drying purposes. We are constantly
using the coal and intend to eontinne to use it, aad
those interested may satisfy themselves by calling at
our establishment. We feel proud of being the
first to prove the value of the coal of that region.
Yours, Kumy & Kyxos, Silver City Brewery.
Avnotuer CouLece ror San Franetsco.— We learn
from the Evangel, the Baptist organ of this city,
that active steps are already being taken for the establishmeat of a college in this city, to be under the
direetion of that growing religious denomination.
They have doae well to seleet this city for its location. The Methodis’s at Saota Clara, the Congregationalists at Oakland, the Catholies in this city,
already have their denotainational eolleges ; why not
the Baptists? here is room aod need for all.
When chipping wrought-iron the ebisel should he
dipped in greasy waste occasioaally; the labor is
ouch reduced thereby.
A New Mininc Law.—The Nevada Territorial
Legislature, at its late session, passed a law entitled
« An Aet for the Encouragement of Miaing,” approved February 20,1864. The Virginia Union coioments upon the same as follows —
It isan aet which the mining community have
long stood very much in need of. Jt provides that
sharcholders in mining elaims which are unineorporated, ean be sold out of the claim when they refuse
to pay their proportion of the expense of improvements made on the mine by the direction of owners,
representing a majority of interest. 1t has been
common for owners in mining elaims to oeglect, or
refuse to pay, their just and proportioaate share of
the expense of prospecting them, because they have
reason to feel confident that their eo-owners will not
go to the trouble and expense of eompelling payment,
even where it can legal y be done, and when eompnnies are ineorporating, it has beea a eommon thiag for
soaie of the owners io the claim to refuse to sign the
deed of trnst, so that they ean avoid the payinent
of assessments and not get sold out. And another
sinilar case oftea occurs. It is common for men
when they go to new mining distriets, to locate claims
for theinselves and friends ia the same eompany, and
it is too frequently the ease that the friend ungratefully refuses to either sign over the interest he has
thus aequired to some person who would willingly
take it, and pay assessments oa it ete. The active
mibers of this State have long needed such a law.
Tpusters oF Mrainc Incorvorations.—Aa act to
authorize Mining Corporatioas to inerease or diminish the number of their ‘l'rustees has been introduced
ia the Senate. It takes two thirds of all the stockholders to do it; eertificate must be filed in the
office of Seerctary of State, and County Clerk ; provided, that the number of Trustees shall not be diminished to less thao three. 1t shall be the daty of
the Trustees, after the filing of such eertificate, to
call a general ineeting of the stoekohiders for the
purpose of electing Trustecs.
