No Jess than sixty-five teams, besides horsemen, hovo yassed within the last thirty days. We learn by Tanks, Passmore and others that now and rich discoveries are continually bein made, and the work of development goes briskly va. Col. Stevenson, recently from that region, takes with him to New York rich speeiniens, nmakgan. etc., which he confidently helinves will enable him to proeure a million of dollars eapital to enable him to operato in the Rnss and Jnyo districts. Cnpital is all that is faired to mako that the feuding mining district of the State. Awnvan Rrvort or tne Gourp & Curny Mrvixa Cosvany.—From the annuol report of the lute President, Jno. O. Worl. Hsq. we glean the following interesting facts: Durng the past year there has been delivered from the mine 4,812 tons of seeoud class oro to the eompany's mill, yielding $1,520,651 53—$316 per ten, and to various other mills 43,907 tone third elass ores, from which have been extreted $2,400,204 57—354 56 per ton; 2414 tons first class ore, valued nt $2,800 per ton, have heen shipped to Mngland. From assays made daily the ores worked have averaged in value nbont $400 per ton; the ainount of metal extraeted, $316 per tou. The cost of reducing the ores is about $38 per ton. The quantity of ores developed in the upper works has stcalily inereased, in addition to the large bodies continuing below. ‘The newimprovements to the reduction works aro to be eompleted within thirty dnys, and eighty stamps will be in successfal operation the latter part of March vext, enabling the company to 1eduee nbout seventy-five tons of second and third class ores every twenty-four hours, producing alarge ainonnt of bullion, and at less expense. The cost of mining the ores, including all expenses, does not exceed $8 per ton. The Company have now on hand fully three y«ars’ supply of fuol. The inanagers are reeommended to sink and prospeet the lode to an additional depth of five hundred feet. The assets of the eompany, exelasive of bullion on hand and baluaces iu the treasury, are valued at $1,360,000. Parer.—The paper upon which we are now printing the Press, is the best that can be obtaiacd of its size in this market. Tn strength and whitenea, it will he observed to be of a superior quality. In order to seenre a heavier article de-igned to be used hy us,we have sent our orders Hast, with the intention of importing onr own stock. With the abundance of excellent material going to waste in California, we regret to acknowledge that there is no paper inill on the coast that yet furaishes a superior quality of priuting paper. ~ <> Invortast Duoiston.—An important decision was made by the Geueral Lond Office, on Wednesday last, and announeed in this City by telegraph, the next day, involviag the title of the site of the city of Ned Bluff, California, in which Granville Doll was claimant, aud the-citizens of «Red Bluff contestants; the ease being an appealed one from the Register of the State. Tne Aguira.—The effort to run ehains under the Aquiln hove nut yet succeeded, although hopes are still entertained that the object will be aecomplished. No afswer to propositions on this side to raise tne ship have yet been received. ‘fhe divers which havo been sent out by the Government and the underwriters are expected on the next steamer. . couraging developmieuts already made. The deeision is adverse to the claimant. : (Written for the Mining and Selentific Nreas.} From Qwen’s River, Owrssvinne. Key's Mining Disrnict, Owen’s River Valley, Jan. 1, 186-4. Mrasrs.Jépitons :—Thinking that a few_lines from this new and distant mining region might be iuteresting to the many readers,of the Mixixa axp Screntiric Press, I send you the following. A little inoro than a month ago, the Iudians held undisputed possession of this part of the valley, having killed some of the prospeetors aud run the others off. But tho supposed wealth of the hills eould not be given up, und now there is a town of sixty inhubitaats. The elimate is considered superior to any loeality on the Eastern slope. The yalley is ten miles wide, and is well watered by Owen’s river snd other small streams running from thie inountains on cither side. We hove a large share of agricultural lnnd; Bishop's ereck, u large and beautiful stream whieh flows from the Sierras, woters a tract of fertile land four iniles long, by a little more than three in width, which is fast being settled up. ‘The river is bordered by splendid grass land. The mines are tbouglit to be exceedingly promisiag. The ledges nre numerous and full of inetal, but we have not tested them snficiently to kaow what kind, or what proportion of the different metalsthey contain. Gold, silver, iron and lead are found. Many energetie prospectors are out among the hills every day, making new discoveries. ‘There are two companies avw operating. ‘The Rubieon eompany, superiteaded by Mr. John Ievans, of yonr city, nre working four of their ledges. ‘he Last, Maahattan, Twin Sisters No. Land No. 2,is being worked night and day. Their prospects are highly flattering. Che San Franeisco compauy have their buildiags up and are rendy . to commence un their ledges. I think the miueral wealth of our hills, eouneeted with our agricultural resourees, will soon make this a place of note. Sunscrizer. ASSESSMENT AND SaLeE or Minino Stocx.—In the Senate, on ‘Thursday, Mr. Haskin introdueed tbe following bill : Szcrion 1st.—The Secretaries of all Mining Companies within this State, wbon advertising the assessment on the stock of their respective Companies, or when giving aotice of sale or account. of aay. delinquency, shall name the District in which the mining ground is situated. . t “Section 2d—Repeals all former conflicting acts. Some Legislative action similar to the above is greatly needed. We have repeatedly called attention to the evil which tho above bill is ealeulated to remedy. The bill, however, is not quite as full as it should be.‘ We'would suggest that the bill be made applicable to all mining notices whateyer, where the name of the mine or company is referred to. , The ntices calling the annual meeting of stockholders for the choice of “ ruatees, ete., should, by all’ means, ‘be iacluded.
Important Mimirary Orarr.—A_ military order has been issued from Headquarters of the Pacific Department, notifying all persons on Catalina Island to vaeate forthwith. The object of this order dues aot appear. A reasonable eonjecture is that the islund is wanted by the Governmeut for fortifieatiou purposes. It is evidently a very important’ position for such employmeut. ‘The order, however, must work 2 great hardship to those who have cominenced mining operations thereon, as we understand eonsiderable capital has been expeaded, and most euCaptain West, with his company, was to take possession of the island on the 26th ultimo. Tur Puaenr Fme Insurance Company, of ‘Hartford, is oue of the oldest as well as best in America. Mr. R. H. Magill, general agent for the Pacific Branch, is iatroducing a new system of conduet in the iusuraace busiaess here, which caanot fail of success, and rendering the Phoeaix a favorite and foremost eompany.
