The AMining and Scientific Dress, 247 Mining Gassip. EDITED BY.-+ es eeeeee Hove e eres FRANK WADDDELL, YOR TNE MINING AND SCIENTIFIC PRESS. Decistox.—In the case hetween Slnpley nad Larrimore, wherein an netion was brought by the plaintiff to secure the amount of $2,875, being the differenee sustained upen on order to oe and tho sale of the said purchaso of ten shares of Real del Moate stock; nlso the conmission upon the ganie, anlounting to $50—wag decided hy the jory returuing the following verdict, ¢ ou the 9th instant: “Wo find for the plaintiff (Shipley), and assess the damages in the sum of $2,925.” his verdiet carries costs. he counsel for tbe defeadnnt applied for a stay of proeeedings fur twenty days, which was granted. Messrs. Pixley, Smith and Ilale appeared for plaintiff, and Messrs. Speucer and Jarboe for defeudant. Prrsoxau.— Among the numerous passengers who took their departure for the East, on the steamer Golden City, on the 13th inst., we notiee, among others, tho names of our mueh esteemed friends, Mr. and Mrs. Joeob Underhill, Mr. and Mrs. B. Tloward, Mr. E. Leonard, Mrs. R. L. Ogden, Mr. and Mrs. James Otis, Miss Macondray, Miss Sather ond J. C. L. Wadsworth. We wisht them a pleasant trip, and trust, ere long. to have the ngreeable duty of welcoming them among us agaiu. Jnievs.—As San Francisco is so much infested witb the following deseribed elass of individuals, we are prompted to clip the unuexed extrnet, and pubish it for their espeeial benefit :—“ There are many people who nre too indolent to work them™ selves, and while they are loafing ahout and see others who are industrious and at work, will stop aud talk to them by the hour, witb no otber osteusible purpose but to prevent them from working. Such persons have a very limited idea of the vatue of time; if uone to them, it surely has value to others. Such facts should be remembered.” Lawyers at Law.—Mr. W. 1. Watace vs. THE Qriexstnver Minino Cospany.—The plaintiff iu this aetion has filed a complaint, and summoas has heen accordiugly issued agaiust the defendonts. It asks for judgment in the sum of $2,000 for legal serviees rendered them as attorney and eounsel for the said defendants. Mr. Patterson, another attorney, las also commenced proccedings upon the same ground of complaint for the sum of $3,000. Heavy J.oss.—lt‘is said that one of the prime causes of the recent heavy failure which took place in this city, during the past week, is attributed principally to reckless speeulations in stock. We learn of one single instanee wherein the purties lost in a transnction the sum of $75,000. Really this shonld he a warning to many of our mereantile houses, who are addieted, to a great extent, in this same species of mining gnmbling. It is quite time that more prudence should be exhibited in stock transactions. Orr in Haste.—Rumor has it that a well known and nt one time an exteusive operator in “ feet,” who, for some time past, has been residing at Virginia City, took rather a kasty departure, overland, for the Kast, a few daysago. Some say that in his haste he forgot to settle several very important matters. As the party is well known iu the community, we refrain from giving his name uutil we gain more reliable iuformation. _Buxtion Reeriven.—Tbe Rochester Consolidated G. & S. M. Co. received, on the 9th instant, two hundred ounces of bullion, heing the result of seventy pounds of their working ore. This speaks well for the Slate Range District. . Divinrnn.—The Pride of the West Mining Co. have deelared .a dividend of $5 per share, which is payable on the 15th of ‘this month. mor River Caxat Co.—It is a matter of nee interest to the citizens, miners as well as ranchmen, of the Owens Livor couatry that the Owens River Canal Company snceeeded, aotwithstanding strong opposition, in securing the franehise which they asked of tbe late Legislature, for the privilege of clearing the npper waters of Owens River, of obstruetions, so that logs might he run down that stream from the timber regiou above. The cost of doing such work will he heavy, nud no company eould offord to do it without some seeurity for the use of their improvements. That security has now been granted, in the way of a finnchise, nnd we presume the Company will take immediate and aetive steps to carry out their eoutemplated work, nnd proceed energetieally with the construction of the canal, ereetion of a sawmill, ete. The unexpeeted influx of population into the mines nnd agricultural portions of that region during the present season, ndd greatly to the value of proposed improvements contemplated in the prospectus of the company, and ought to produce an important advance in their stock. ‘his eompany now holds the key to the lumber trade of this heautiful valley, and the first rigbt to water for canal purposes which must soou become of immense value. Presentation. —Mr. J. C. L. Wadsworth, late Secretary of the Gould & Curry Mining Company, has been presented with a handsome parting gift, consistiug of a beautiful silver piteher and salver, hearing tbe following inscription: “ Presented by the Trustees of the Gould & Curry Silver Mining Compauy to their late Seeretary, J. C. L. Wadsworth. S.F., April 13th, 1864.” Mr. Wadsworth, while aeting in the eapacity of Seeretary, rendered to the eompany many valuable services, and the Trustees thought this time the most npnropriate for the presentation, on aceouat of his departure for the Kast. JIuerovinc.—Mr. W. P. Denckla, President of the Paeific Board of Brokers, has heen lying dangerously ill, at bis residence, dnring the past week, with the typhoid fever. We are now happy to state that, at last aceounts, he was improving, nnd we
hope to have tbe pleasure of soon seeing his happy eountenanee upon our streets again. We feel assured that the members of his Board will give bima hearty welcome back to his old post. CrenitasiE.—The loyal ladies of Gold Tiill, N. T., are taking steps with the view of gettiug up a1! extensive festival for the Sanitary Fund. We hope that they will realize n large return for their worthy and very creditahle undertaking. Borsr.—The gold-seckers do not seem to rush off in sueh an exeiting way as they did a few weeks ago for the Boise mines. Keep cool, sega and think well betore you aet. Ayorner Divinunn.—The Maxwell Creek G. and S. M. Company have deelared a dividend of $1 per sbnre, which was made payable on the 15th inst. Ayreors Mi.—This mill is now running night and day, and is said to work heautifully. It is eonsidered one of the finest mills in Esmeralda. Norra American is anything but firmly held hy those who preteud to know what is goiug on. We know of one party who “ went out ” onthe afteruoon of the 12th, having sold over 250 shares at figures rangiug from $132 to $135 per share. Rear De. Moxrs.—A telegraphic despatch was received hy the eompany, on the morning of the 13th, stating that they had shipped from the mine $15,000 in hullion. There is no ehange as to the eondition of the mine, and things look favorable. Jogepmine, Coso, is looking much hetter, iu the way of priee at all events. A large number of shares having been sold at from $3 to $3. Owens Rrver.—The reports from this plaee are of . the most flattering deseription. Drsiazs tro Pay.—Mr. Hall Me.Allister brought, suit iu tho 4th District Court, a few days ngo, against J. G. Shirts, Harriet Shirts and Potosi G. ond S. Miniag Co., to force them to at once interplead in the ease, where he is defendaut, and J. G. Shirts is plaintiff. (The case we spoke of in onr last week's cdition.) Mr. McAllister states that some time ago he beeame the holder of a check on Wells, Fargo & Co., for the sum of $5,000 and two certificates of stoek, each ten shares of the eapital stock of the Potosi Company, whieh be was to hand over to Mr. Shirts, upon bis necting up to eertain obligations, hut Sbirts fhiling to do so, thus the Potosi Miuing Co. gave lim uotice, that if he rendered up the said property, that they would hold him personally responsible. MeAllister therefore askes the Court to make all of tbe claimants come forward nnd interplead, so he ean give up the stock and money to whom it correctly helougs. Unsvust.—In looking over the columus of a weekly cotemporary, publisbed in this city, our attention has heen directed to an item as eharacteristie as unjust. It gives the name of a party, a dealer in stoeks, who has had the misfortune to baye his uame placed upon the Block or Deliuqneut List of one of our eity stock hoards. We are all liable to encounter misfortunes—and if sueh should be our fote we naturally do not desire to have our name and private affairs “paraded”? and advertised to the publie. Would the pnper in question like to have their business affuirs made known to the publie? We rather thiuk not. Why then are they not sufficiently charitable to do unto others as they would wish to he done by. Notbing like being charitable, if the party be worthy of the same—for we are allliahleat any time to geta tumhle from the ladder of fortune. Snonny Opinion. — We recently everhcard the eonversation of a “ would be high toned ” iudividual who by ehance bas accumulated a little more money than bis exalted coneeit will allow him to possess without its causing him to aet. the part of a buffoon. He remarked the following to a gentletunn in our hearing at the entrance of one of our fashionable hotels. The subject was first upon stocks, theu it came upon hrokers, when the witty gentleman, lately from the East, remarked in a sarcastie manner “ Oh ! indeed, my hoy! Broker means, uo doubt, Broke, Broke, Broke—as much as to imply thnt no broker, in his opinion eonld be any thiug but a broken down individual. We took a good survey of this large sized piece of pomposity, smiled to ourselves, and went on our way rejoicing thnt he was no acquaintanee of ours. Hor.—We had the pleasure of “ tripping the light fantastie toe” atthe Lick House, on the evening of the 11th inst. The soeial gathering was given in compliment to several Indies and gentlemen who took their departure for the East, on the steamer Golden City. Wespenta most pleasant eveniug, and among the happy throng, we noticed that “ feet ” wereremarkably well represented, embracing those ot Gould & Curry, Potosi, Ophir, Imperial, Chollar ete. We were quite envious of these lucky possesgors of valuable feet, hut consoled ourselves witb the old adage that “there is a good day eoming.” Pownen Manvraerurinc Conrany.—tThe articles of ineorporntion of the Pacific Powder Mill Company were filed with the County Clerk, on the 13th iust. The location of the mill is to be upon Paper Mill ereek, in Marin eounty. Capital stock, $30,000. The Trustees are N. H. Olds, A. H. Meyerpeter and D. B. Goode. Reronxen.—Mr. J. S. Henning, Superintendent of the North American G. & S.M. Co., has returned to tbe city again, looking remarkably well, notwithstanding his late reported indisposition. The climate of this place always seems to agree with him. We admire his taste in selectiug this city to recupe. rate.
