Vrin Minina is a very complicated business ; one
in which it is easier to throw away moncy, perhaps,
than in any other immense exeavations in solid rock
and heavy timbering, reqniriug judgment and skill
—not always at command—expensive machinery to
raise aud crush or smelt the ore, pump out the water and raise and lower the men, and finally, thorough aequaintauco with the scicnee of chemistry and
metallurgy in order to separate the gold from the
ores, are requisite to success. And all this, even
wlien the vein is rich, well developed, even and coutinuous. Very few metalliferous veins are equally
rich for any considerable distance, either lengtliwise
or up and down; neither are surface indications
always to be trusted. ‘I'he consequence of all which
is, a double quadruple uncertainty. On Lake Superior, a region supposed to be nearly pure copper.
there have been hundreds of companies formed, and
at least a hundred mines opened and worked, but it
is a fact that for the first ten years of active mining
there, but two of the mines paid a cent of dividend
to the stockholders. Even iu England, it is the
opinion of tho Keeper of Mining Records, Mr. Hunt,
that excepting iron, mining for ‘tho metallic minerals
is not on the whole, remuuerative.
How impolitic and absurd then the proposition to
tax the gross receipts of mines of this description,
when in the process of deyvclopment. The natural
and unavoidable risks encountered, are quite sulficient to deter all but the most venturesome from
risking their capital in such undertakings. The
largest net benefit which could be derived by the
governmeut from such a course would be but trifling;
while it would endanger a class of industry, which is} y;
of the most vital importance, not only to the government, but to the entire commercial and mechanical
interests of the country. Its snecess will be the
death-kuell to all progressive miuing on the Pacific
Coast.
Snort or Powper.—The Rcese River Reveille
says that powdor is very scarce in that locality at
preseut, and none but a favored few can obtain it at
all. ‘his scarcity comes heavy upon the miner.
Many works have been compelled to cease operations altogether in consequence of inability to obtain
powder for blasting purposes.
An Experiuentat Roastine Furnace is ia process
of erection at Austin, N. T., by the Isabella Company, for the roasting of ores. One of the objects
of the company is to roast ores for experimental
purposes, and for assaying them prepavatory to their
being sent to the mills for working.
