e dining and Seientitic Dress, 104 [From the Dainy Pain Press, Friday, August 18.] LOW’S GRAIN SEPARATOR. It is generally conceded that the American peoplé are the most iuventive in the world, . particularly as relates to the origin of machinery for practical uses aud its improvemeut. Iu this respect they are the benefactors of the nations, fur the product of their genius enriches agriculture and sintplifies the processes of labor. ‘Lhe Fair that is now being held, is designed to furnish ocular proof of the rapid strides daily makiug iu this country toward the creation and perfection of everything that . is valuable as an implement to develop and: We have been to no expeuse for repairs on the Separutor sinco we have had it in use. It . will clean 125 bushels of wheat per hour, and clean it well. Jt requires but little power to run it, very little attendance, and the waste of grain is but wifling. No reasonable consideration would ind:ce us to part with the machine provided we couhl not obtain another of the same kind. It works to our entire satisfaction, and we liave no hesitation in recomnreuding it to the public.” errs Brooxs’ Parsxr Busoy Srrinc.—Direetly opposite the entrance to the Pavilion may be seen a small model buggy which is attracting much attention, and the peculiar features of ; which are connected with the springs npon elevate the practical arts and sciences. As’ which the body of the miniature vehicle rests. furnishing a case in point to illustrate this idea, . "pe eliptical and other stcel springs generally we may refer to Mr. Leonard Luw’s Grain Sep. arator, a Sacramento invention, and certainly . one of the most useful as well as ingenious . pieces of machinery in tlie Pavilion. It is gn object of attraction to every one who understands its uses; and from the fact that it has beeu thoroughly tested, and proved more thau adequate to the performance of all the . duties for which it was intended, is looked upou as an establisbed fact, only requiring to be well knowu, to become universally adopted. The press has passed mauy deserved encomiums upon this invention, and the stamp of popular approbation has already made it a general favorite. Jt is quite peculiar in its construction, aud consists in a.series of sieves, placed one over the other, and arranged around a ceutral shaft, in sets of from two to eight in number, as may he desired, aud capable of cleaning from 50 to 250 bushels of grain per honr. ‘he operatiou of the machine is very simple; the motiou beiug imparted to the sieves by meaus of a shaft, on which there is a slide crank to regulate the length of the vibratory motion, and which may be readily adjusted. So small is the power required to drive the machiue that a belt three-eights of an inch in width will convey power sufficient to clean 7,000 pounds of wheat in an hour. ‘The speed of the machine is regulated hy cone pulleys. The wheat is placed in 1 hopper at the top, from which it is fed into the machine, automically, by means of a telescopic nozzle. Hach machine is divided vertically into two or more compartments, called sets, into , which thegrain is fed equally by atesebars dividing the flow. Each set may be coniprised of a greater or less number of sieves iu a set, as may be found necessary to perfect work. ‘The inustard, chess, or other small grain, is first separated from the wheat and automicully disposed of; the grain afterwards passes from sieve to sieve throughout the entire series, each sieve taking from the mass more or less of the imperfect grains, until the clean wheat is finally deposited in a proper reservoir at the bottom. ‘here is also a convenient arrangement of raffers, by which the sieves may he simultaneously cleaned of anything choking them, by the simple pulling of a string, which operation may be performed as often as desired without stopping the machine. ‘The testimo. nials which Mr. Low exhibits are conclusive as to the merits of his separator. We think the invention worthy of their endorsement, and -shall here re-produce a couple of certificates, one from Marysville, and the otlicr from Sacramento. Mr <A. D, Starr, of the “ Buekeye Mills,” iu a letter dated lrom Marysville, Augnat 12th, says : “ Leonarp Low, Esq—Dear Sir :—My flour is certainly worth tweuty-five ceuts per barrel ore by having grain cleaned by your machine than it would be by any other I have sceu. 1 cau truly say, also, that it is my candid opinion there is not of different make another Grain Separator iu this State which can favorably compare er compete with yours. It separates barley and blue pod from wheat to perfection. In fact, to sum all up, it is a perfect Grain Separator, and just what all mills want in this State. This one of miue far exceeds my most sanguine expectations.” Over date of Sacramento, August 10th, 1865, Mr. 8. 11. Garfield, of the Pioneer Mills, certifies as follows : aL. Low—Deur Sir :—In reply to your request respecting your Grain Separator, we would state that we have had one of them inuse at our mill for tho last twelve months. . A. A. Snyder, used, are here substituted hy a simple arrangement of wooden bars, connected with shackles and attached to light spiral springs upon which the weight of the bugey aud its load rests, with a large amount of leverage, wuich gives it great strength and much more elasticity than can be obtained from the springs ordinarily in use. By this device the weight of the load is made to bear at the point where the least straiu is brought upon the body of the vehicle, and where it will ‘be found inmost easy and convenient for the occupant. ‘The spring is entirely concealed from view, and placed so as to render it much less liable to get out of order than those in common use, where numberless small irons and bolts are employed to keep the several parts in place. An attachment of light scroll work may } be made to the wood work or braces, giving the vehicle an airy aud ‘clegant appearance. The construction of these springs is such as to admit of their carryiug great weight. Any further informatiou can be obtained by calling npon the patentee, at 39 Webb street, in this city. ae Cuancz or Tiae.—The time of holding the next, State Fair, has been changed from the 11th to the 18th of September.
