PATENT AGENCY.

Information for Inventors!
Inventors on this coast having their applications for patents made
out through onr Agency can sign their papers at once, and thns
secure their rights at least three montha sooner than by trusting the
sanie to distant agencies, situated in New York or Washington.
The Patent Law Amendment Act, of March 4th, 1861, and
March 3d, 1463, now in foree, introduccs several important
changes in our Patent System. The generat practice of the
Patent Offiee, however, ln rezani to the examination and
issue of Letters Patenttor new luyentious, remains nearly
the-same as heretotore. a
The amendment of 3d March, 1863, provides, In section 3,
that every patent shall bo dated as of a day vot later than
six Toonths after the tine at whieh It was passed and allowed, and untice thereof sent to the applicant or his agent,
And if the tinal fee tor snch patent be not pald within the
sald six months, the patent shallbe witheld, and the inventlon thereln described shall beecomo JD property as
against the npplicant therefor: Provided, That in all cases
whero patents haye been allowed previous ta the passage of
thisact, thesaid six nionths shall be reckoned from the date
of stich passage. BY
The first question, therefore, that presents itself to the inventor, who desires to procure a patcut, ls: "Can Jobtain a
patentee A positive auswer to this question ls only to be bad
y presenting a formal apnlleation fora patent to the Government, embracing a petition, speciticntion, modcl, duplicate,
drawings, and the payment of the prescribed official tecs.
Aside from these steps, all the inventor can do is, to submit
his plans to persons expcricneed in tho business of obtaining
patents, and sollclt thesr opinion and ndvice. II the parties
fionsulted are bonorable inen, the inventor may safely counde his ideas to them, and they will inform him whether or
cot his invention is probably patentable. .
Thoso who have made inventions and desire to consult
with us respecting the same, arc cordially invited to do so.
e shall be happy to see them in person at onr office, or to
advise them by mail, or through the Mining anp Sc.entiric
Press. In allecases they may expect Irom us an honest
opinion. For these consultations, opinion and advice, we
make no charge. A Demme noalne sketch, and description of
the invention should be sent, together with a stamp tor return
Gstnges Write plain ; donot usc peneil or pale ink; be
rief.
Remember that all business committed to our care, and all
consultations, aro kopt by us sceret, and strictly confidenfl.
Caveats.
A Caveat is a confidential communication made to the
Patent Office, and is therefore filed witliln its secret archives.
The privllege secured under a caveat ls, that it entities the
eaveator to receive notice, fer a period of ono year, of an
application for a patent subsequently filed, and which is adjudged to be novel, and is likely to interfere-wlth the in‘ventlon described in the caveat, and the caveator Is then required to complete his appllentionfor a patent within three
months from the date of sald notice. Caveat papers shonbl
be very cab ull ieepateds Our fee for the service varies
from $10 to $20. The Government fee under the new law is
reduced to ten dollars; and this sum does not apply, as
heretofore, as part of the fee on presenting an applicntlon
for as patenInyeutors will ofttimes find it very importint to take advantuge of the caveat systein—tiie expense under tho law
belng Bomnaratively small,
To enable us to prepare caveat paper, we only require
asketch and deseription of the invention; no model being
necessary.
Expense of Applying for a Patent, Rejections, sto.
Under the new law, the Government fee, on fillng an application for a pateut, ls fifteen dollars ; aud if the patent is
allowed, py eny dollars additional is required. If rejected,
the first fee of fifteen dollars is all that is demanded. Engsh, French, Austrian, Prussian Spanish, and Inventors of
every nationality, may now obtaln patents m the United
States npon the same terms as our own citizens. The only
diseriinination made is agalnst subjeetsof govermment tbat
discriminate against the inhabitants of the United States.
To the foregoing officlal fees inust be added the Attorney's
fees for preparing the varlous doenments and drawlngs.
Our eharge for preparing a ease, presenting Itto the Gov
ernment, aud attending toall business counected with it,
untlla deelsion is given, Isfrom $20 to$i0. If the patent is
granited no further ageney expenses enauss. If the appllcatlon is rejected we a cnusecthorough Investigatlon to be
made Into the reasons presented to the Commissioner for
refnsing the patent. In ae this examination, we have
excess to all the drawings, models, books and specifications
cited in reference, and we report the result as early as possible to our client. .
If the rejectlon proves to bo an unjust one—which somethnes happens—it ean generally be reversed, and the pateut obtained by coutestinstheease. Forthis prosecution we
eharge a fee pruportionate to the extra labor involved, pan
able euly on the Issue of the patent ; but our demand will be
roasonable and satisfactory to our elfents, and will bo arraneed beforchand by special agrecinent.
The system adopted by us works well, fives general satlsfaction and presents to nll applicants, rich or poor, an equal
ce of having thelr patent cases prepared, conduet-ed and prosceuted in the best manner, by experienced attorney's, upou the most moderate terms. Inventors who
have rejected cases, prepared either by themselves, or for
them by other agents, and desire to asecrtain their prospects of success by furtlier efforts, are Invited to avail themaelves of our unequallod facilitles in securing favorable results. We have been suceesslul lu securlug Letters Patent
in many cascs of sucha matter. Our terms for such cases
are yery moderate.
Models, Remittances, ots.
The law requires that the inventor shall, in all cases, furnish a model, which must not exceed twelve inches in any
ol lts dimentlons; it should be neatly made, of hard wood
or metal, or both, varnished or palnted ; the name of the
nventor should be engraved or painted on It cousplenously.
Wheu the invention consists ot an improvement on some
known machine, a full workiug model of the whole wlll not
be necessary. It should be sufficiently perfect, however, to
showy with clearness, the nature and operation of the invention.
‘As soon as tho model Is ready, It should becarcfully boxed
ond shipped oy express or otherwiso, to our address, namoly: Dewry Co., Mining and Sclentific Press, No. 505
Clay Street, corner of Sansome, San Franelseo, Cal. Prepay expenses and send express rccelpt ta us by mall.
Simultaneously with the model, the inventor should send
ns the tirst Installment of the Govermnont tee, fifteen dol-.
lars, The money muy be forwarded either by express With
tbe model, or by mail. The safest way to remit is by dralt
on San Franelseo, ee to our order. Always send a Ictiter w_th)the model, and also tho reiittance stating the name
and address of the sender, e
Afull description should also be sent with the model, embodying all the Ideas of tbe inventor respectlug the improvemen
Ou the recite of the model and Government fee, the case
is duly registered upou our books, mid tho ppplication
proceeded With asias: as possible. When the documents
areready we send them tothe inventor by mail, for hls oxamination, signature and affidavit, with a letter of Instruetlon, éte. Onrlee tor preparing the cnse isthen due and
will be ealled for. The case will then be presented to the
Patent O“{s2, and as soon as the patent Is ordered to be issued the Government fee, namely, twenty dulitars.
Inventors who dv business with us will be notified of the
atate of thelr application in the Patent ONice, when it ls poselble for usto do so. We do not require the personal attend:
ance of the inventor, unless it is one of great complication;
the business can be well done by correspondence.
When the Invention consists of a new artlele of manufac:
ture, or a new composition, simpios of the separate ingredients, sufficlent tomake the cxporiment, and also of the manufactnred artlele itself must be furnished.
he average time required to procure a patent, when the
