154 Che Mining and Srientifiy Press. A Spicy Comerimunt.— A correspondent of the Sacramento Union gives the fol owing . notice of one of our fair contributors who has combined utility with .bernty in-her work : Dee d'dly the prett est thing on exhibition in the Fair ts an afghan, work:-d by Miss Addie Meacham. a young lady only twelve years old, as I learn from the columns of the Cul. The Professional Cards. Trades and Manufactures. Our Patent Ageney. Tho Parent Acency of the Mining axp Scinntiric Press lias been signallzed wilh remarkable success during the pasttwoyears. The importance tothe inventive genius of this coast of 2 thorough and reliable agcucy for the solicita tion of Lerrers Parent froin the Enited States and foreign Governments cannot be ovcr-rated,and the Proprietors of the question arises in one’s mind as we look at . Psess, feeling the responsibility which rests upon them, and this wonder of embroidery: If tle young . lady does this at twelve, what will she do at eighteen, and what niiracle of needlework may wo not expect her to accomplish at twenty-four? Wor twelve is not the noon of life, however it may indicate meridian on the dial plates which look down on us from the church towers. Crowds gather around this afglian, visiting and revisiting it, Sudiny it impossible to pass it, and still returning to its vicinity as though each rose of its composition had a special magnet spell. here is only one thing which surnrises me about the work —not the namo of Joun Pav, but some other man’s, is embroidered in the corner. This is of course a mistake which will he remedied when the exhibitionis over—the intention being to mislead people as to whom the giltis really intended for. I wish I knew the young lady, so that when she threatened to give me a piece of her mind for speaking thus freely abont her in print, I could reply that 1 should prefer a piece of her worsted. I do not know, though, after all, but that I'd prefer to wait and have a piece embroidered for me when the artist had redched the age of eighteen, for of course it wonld be just fifty per cent. better than the present one, done at twelve. Bnt long before that time, it is likely that the whole work of her needle will be selfishly claimed by some individual who will have taken her for better or worsted, and will refuse to permit the exquisite talent for embroidery, of which we here have a specimen, to be exercised for the benefit of others. Tas Bessemer Procrss——The growing application of the Bessemer system to the prodaction.of steel, with the much larger attention that is being paid now than has been paid for some time past in tha application of steel fo uses before assigned to iron, is oceasioning a growing demand in Sonth Staffordshire. Mr. Clayton, at Westbromwich, is now erecting eighteen furnaces at the works of the Dowlais Company, twenty-four at the Barrow Steel Works, is making castings for six at Hbobw-Vale, is on with the thirdlot for Messrs John Brown & Co., Sheffield, and after putting up twenty-two for Messrs. Cammill & Co., at the Cyclops Works.in the town, is now putting up six for the Yorkshire Steel and Ironworks of the same firm at Penistone. The same maker, is also putting up furnaces at the Lencanshire Steel Works, Gorton Lane, and at the Gibraltar Works, Newton Heath. These furnaces are all for smelting iron to make steel or for the heating of ingots of stecl—London Engineer. «@ REMOVAL! R.
