The Mining unt Srientific Press. Puotoerarmice Curmicats.—The attention of photographic artista is called to the AE! display of granufated and chrystalized nitrate ; of silver, which has receutly heen placed by . Dr. Lanzzweert, in a show case, in the Minne anp Sctentiric Press Mineral Department. It isa matter of the greatest importauce to the photographer, that he should be supplied with a pure article of nitrate of silver, and to this end Dr. L. hes made this preparation a special study. He prepares and exhibits it both chrystalized aud granular; in the latter form to avoid the necessity of Irandling the chrystals, to break then up, where smalt quantities only are wanted. These samples are a home product, made of California silver and fully equal, if aot superior to the best that can be imported. The amount of this “article required by the photographers vn the Pacific, Coast caunot he less than 400 pounds a invoth . —a very importapt item when its value is taken into cousideration. “Yn the same case with the above, we find samplés of copper ores, copper hulliop, and sulphate of copper, from Peavine Valley, Nevada, with diplomas awarded to Dr. Lanszveert by the mauagers of the Washoe Fair of 1863. The sulphite of copper was maonfactured direct from the poor ores of that metal. without the use of “ free sulphurtc acid,” and by a process of his own, which the Doctor has freely given to the world, and fully described in the Mixixe axp Screntiric Press of a recent date. . 6 = : ABORIGINAL AND LABRADONIAN AUTOMATON Toys.—In one of the slow cases of our collection of minerals and curiosities, are several automaton toys of a very ludicrous character. Three of the figures are men, and three women, to represent memhers of the Digger Indian trihe, of Digger manufacture. Three others— a man, wife and baby, clad in skins—are from Jahrador; and, like Cassio’s wine, “ ‘fore God, are hetter than ’tothers.” ‘The whole are funny enougli, and will excite a smile on the countenance of whoever sees them. i _Hazarp’s Powper.—Every sportsman knows something about Hazard’s duck and rifle powder. It is the most popnlar brand in the United States. Edward H. Parker is a large dealer in that article, including blasting powder and fuse. He also deals in shots of all sizes— speecially Tatham’s patent finish drop shop. Place of business, 224 California street. We recommend our friends, with a great deal of confidence. to Mr. Parker’s estatlishment, whenever they wish a reliable article at a fair price. Tue population of California in 1831 was a little over twenty-three thousand ; iu the early part of 1849, twenty-six thousand; in 1850, one hundred and seventeen thousand ; in 1852, two hundred aud sixty-four thoneand ; in 1857, five hundred and thirty-eight thousand, and at this time is over six hundred thousand. i iq Blac Ledge Gold and Silver Mining Company, Lauder county.
